Unveiled over the weekend at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, the Scion FR-S Speedster offers a semi-official look at one tantalizingly real possibility for a future production model based on the new Scion FR-S coupe. Designed and built by Joe Iacono of Iacono Design and Jeremy Lookofsky of Cartel Customs, this slick one-off sports a cutdown windshield, custom hood, fender and deck treatments, 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in sticky Toyo Proxes tires and a suitably over-the-top carbon-fiber rear wing. Rendered in a classic Toyota Racing color scheme, the Scion FR-S Speedster features a competition-style interior with distinctive gauges and other motorsport-influenced appointments.
While no changes were made to the FR-S’s standard 2.0-liter/200-horsepower flat-4 engine, the Speedster’s engine’s does have better downstream breathing thanks to a freer-flowing GReddy SP Elite Exhaust System and power flows to the car’s rear wheels through an ACT heavy duty clutch. The Scion FR-S Speedster’s underpinnings have been comprehensively revamped, with a fully adjustable KW Suspensions coil-over package and stopping power bolstered by upsized Wilwood Superlite 6-piston disc brakes.
"The Scion FR-S Speedster is a true sports car that embodies the spirit of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and our commitment to motorsports," said Toyota National Motorsports Manager Les Unger. "We think enthusiasts are really going to enjoy seeing this vehicle during the race weekend festivities." Following its on-track debut in Long Beach, the FR-S Speedster will be making appearances throughout the year at various other events. As for an open-top production version of the new Scion FR-S, it’s expected to arrive in showrooms within in the next two years.
