Such a Tease: Jeep Floats Another Scrambler Concept

  • Another Jeep Wrangler Scrambler concept debuted at the SEMA aftermarket auto parts show in Las Vegas.
  • The Wrangler Scrambler Concept embodies the classic CJ-8 Scrambler but drops in a V8 and swaps in an independent front suspension.

OK, Jeep, we’re listening. Again. This is the fourth time we’ve seen a Scrambler concept — this one packed with a V8 and a cool rear-facing second row — and we’re ready for the real thing already.

Jeep unveiled the Wrangler Scrambler Concept with SRT performance upgrades on Monday night on the eve of the SEMA (the Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show, the annual aftermarket auto parts showcase in Las Vegas.

Based on a Jeep Wrangler, the Scrambler takes the iconic CJ-8 Scrambler from the 1980s and reimagines it. This doesn’t simply look like a Wrangler with a small truck bed plunked in the rear. This looks suitably trophy-truck-like enough to wear the SRT badge, which is a first for any Jeep Concept. It has a V8 and its credentials don’t stop there.

This machine means to rip up the desert with a new high-travel independent front suspension purpose-built for high-speed adventure. We first saw the same in another Jeep Concept, the Striker. So, is this the Wrangler 392 with the Gladiator Mojave suspension we’ve all been asking for and more?

With desert racing legend Casey Currie acting as consultant on the project and driving a similarly equipped truck in the NORRA 500 (National Off-Road Racing Association), we wouldn’t be surprised. It also gets a beefy rear axle that Jeep claims is “trophy-truck inspired” though we don’t have any more details. Heavy-duty wheels and other racing hardware should be able to handle any terrain thrown at this thing.

Everything about the body on the Scrambler Concept has been reworked, from the sharknose grille to the tail, combining characteristics from both Wrangler and Gladiator parents. The doors are longer than the Wrangler, the rear bodywork is custom, and the tailgate is reimagined from the Gladiator. The second-row seats in the lined truck bed can be reversed 180 degrees to face the rear. They can also be clipped in or removed altogether to add more gear storage.

Inside, performance racing seats promise to keep driver and passengers in place. The Punk’n Orange of the exterior makes an appearance here on trim inserts. Dark Graphite leather covers the seats, and this concept gets bespoke grab handles that highlight its functionality. Get ready to grab on, passengers. Bronze accents really tie the whole concept together.

The best of all worlds collide here in the Jeep Scrambler Concept: Wrangler 392 power, Gladiator utility, Mojave-type suspension capability, and all with retro-styled rear-facing seats.

Enough with the foreplay, Jeep, let’s get to this already.
