Subaru has released a shadowy teaser of its upcoming model: a brand-new, all-electric SUV. We won’t have to wait too long to see what’s hidden in the shadows. The vehicle will be unveiled at the 2026 New York International Auto Show a week from now, on April 1st.
Although the image doesn’t show much, here’s what we can infer.
Subaru’s Plans for 4 EVs by 2026
Subaru has had a plan since 2024 to build four EVs in partnership with Toyota. Subaru and Toyota have been releasing their own versions of vehicles built on the same platforms to achieve the goal of four by 2026. Three out of those four collaborations have already been released:
- Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X/bZ
- Subaru Uncharted and Toyota C-HR
- Subaru Trailseeker and Toyota bZ Woodland
So, we know there’s one more EV collaboration coming between the two. And what was released just last month? You guessed it: Toyota’s new Highlander EV.
We can reasonably assume that this new Subaru EV due in New York will be its version of the Highlander. In a press release, Subaru describes the SUV as “Fast. Family. Fun.”, which could hint that it will have three rows like the Highlander.
One impressive difference is that this new SUV will deliver a whopping 420 horsepower, surpassing the Highlander’s 338 hp. In fact, not a single EV from either Subaru or Toyota comes close to that number.
Subaru has been a bit experimental in its previous releases with brand-new names like “Uncharted” and “Trailseeker.” We’re left wondering if this new SUV will keep the name of Subaru’s existing three-row SUV, the Ascent, or if it’ll get a completely new name.
Since everything is left to our imagination, we’ll have to wait for the New York Auto Show to get the full scoop. We plan to attend the show and will share more information as soon as it’s available.
If you also suspect the new Subaru EV will be the Highlander’s close cousin, check out our video on its debut to learn more about what Subaru might have in store.
