- Nissan plans 20 new and updated models
- A new report says one will revive the Xterra nameplate
Yet more smoke suggests that a fire is burning in Nissan executives’ minds. The brand will reportedly revive a beloved off-roader, bringing out an all-new Xterra in 2028.
Industry publication Automotive News reports that, at a meeting with dealers yesterday, company officers “disclosed plans for a pair of midsize utility vehicles, including a reincarnation of its quirky Xterra SUV coming in 2028.” The announcement came as part of a broader plan to introduce 20 new or redesigned models.
The report comes after Nissan Americas Chairman Christian Meunier said in April that he’d like to bring the model back. In March, an Xterra-like silhouette appeared in a teaser shot of possible future models.
A similar silhouette flashed by in a presentation on future models last spring.
The Xterra was an affordable off-roader sold from 1999 to 2015. Built on a truck-style ladder frame, it once offered features like a manual transmission and even a supercharged V6 engine.
AN reports that the revival “will ride on a new body-on-frame platform designed to support five models, including a redesigned Frontier pickup. The Pathfinder and QX60 crossovers also will switch to the new platform.”
