Report: Honda Extending Lifecycles of Some Models

Among Honda’s most popular models are the Accord, HR-V, and Odyssey, but according to a new report, the next generation of each won’t come until the end of the decade at the earliest.

As a result of a change in direction for its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions, Honda is trying to recoup an estimated $15.8 billion, and that in turn means it will extend the lifecycles of some core models, according to industry publication Automotive News.

According to the publication, a review of a supplier memo says that Honda intends to “extend production of the Odyssey, Accord, and HR-V, as well as the Acura MDX and Integra.” Per Automotive News, the automaker isn’t planning major updates to these models until the end of the decade at the earliest. Previously, vehicle redesigns were expected to be completed sooner.

A Honda spokesperson declined to confirm the information in the memos or comment on the company’s plans, telling Automotive News, “We are very confident in our future product strategy, including our previously announced plans to advance our award-winning hybrid technology to more models.”

What This Could Mean for Shoppers

If you’re considering a Honda model, know that they are among our most recommended vehicles now, and — if history is a lesson — will continue to be in the years ahead.

Honda vehicles have won numerous Best Buy Awards over the years. Consumers concur. Just recently, the Honda brand took top spots in our Consumer Choice Awards, including top overall brand, the most trusted brand, and the one with the best styling.

The vehicles cited in the AN report remain at the top of their respective classes, and should continue to please shoppers even if they aren’t fully revamped for a few years.

Staying Power

The Accord was completely redesigned in 2023 and gained updated technology just this year. It remains one of the top sedans for its spacious interior, overall quality, and top-notch safety and convenience features.

The Odyssey minivan remains one of the best choices for families needing a large, flexible vehicle.

The compact Honda Civic has reigned consistently as Best Buy Award winner in its class, while the HR-V was just freshened this year with new tech and continues to boast one of the roomiest cabins in its class.

Looking Ahead

While the average full redesign for a vehicle occurs at roughly the 6- or 7-year mark, it makes sense for Honda to recoup some of its financial losses by delaying them a little longer for specific vehicles. The approach would also allow the brand to focus on additional hybrid models, which could launch as soon as next year.
