Recall Alert: Mazda CX-70, CX-90 Hybrids Losing Power

Mazda has issued a recall for 31,488 CX-70 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUVs from model year 2025 and CX-90 PHEV SUVs from model year 2024 because they can suddenly lose drive power.

Mazda tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that a software problem “may cause malfunction indicator lights to illuminate, potentially activating a failsafe mode that limits the drive power.”

The company knows of 16 customers who have experienced the problem, but it says the issue has caused no accidents. The recall doesn’t affect every CX-70 and CX-90 PHEV on the road because Mazda changed the software programming during the cars’ production run.

Dealers will reprogram the software to fix the problem. Recall repairs are always free, and software updates tend to be quick repairs.

Automakers recall many cars, sometimes more than once. Manufacturers try to reach every owner to warn them. However, some may fall through the system’s cracks and are left unknowingly driving recalled cars. Check our easy recall tool to determine if your car has any outstanding recalls.
