Subaru has recalled 71,207 Crosstrek and Forester hybrid models due to a fuel cap defect that may cause a gas leak and, ultimately, pose a fire risk. Affected vehicles are as follows:

In a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Subaru says that if these vehicles are left parked with a nearly full tank, high temperatures could raise fuel tank pressure.

This causes the fuel to rise, and if the fuel cap is not sealed properly, some fluid may leak out. The report states, “A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a vehicle fire.”

Subaru is advising owners with affected vehicles to park outside and limit their fuel level to 50% until remedy parts are available.

When repair time comes, Subaru dealers will fix this issue by replacing the fuel filler cap gasket with an improved one that enhances sealing performance. They will complete this service free of charge.

Owners with recalled vehicles will be notified beginning March 25, 2026.

Millions of cars are recalled, sometimes more than once. While automakers do their best to notify every vehicle owner affected by a recall, they don’t always reach everyone. All you need is your vehicle identification number (VIN), license plate, or year, make, and model of your car to get started.
