The recall includes only cars manufactured on certain dates.
In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Kia explains, “The Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) cover may contact a memory chip on the printed circuit board and damage the electrical circuit.” That damage can deactivate the airbags. An airbag warning light will, Kia says, illuminate on the dashboard if the condition is present.
Kia dealers will inspect the recalled cars. Dealers will install a software update that should correct the issue in cars that don’t have a lit airbag warning light. They will replace the Airbag Control Unit in cars that have a lit warning light.
