Troubled electric vehicle (EV) startup Fisker is recalling all 2023 Ocean SUVs because they can suddenly lose drive power.
Fisker tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that software can force the vehicle into a “safe state protection mode” under several conditions.
The company says these conditions may include:
- Wheel slip on icy surfaces at low speed
- Driver changing from deceleration to acceleration at specific low-speed conditions
- Repeated, back-to-back maximum acceleration and deceleration
- Incorrectly triggered drive unit fault monitors, including when activating the rear disconnect clutch or checking the power supply voltage
Drivers can reset the system on their own by cycling power off and on and pressing the brake pedal, Fisker says. But a sudden loss of power while driving could contribute to an accident.
Fisker says it will fix the problem with an over-the-air software update, so owners don’t need to bring the vehicles in for repair. Recall repairs are always free.
Automakers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely get them all. Millions of cars on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to determine if your car is one of them.
