Nissan has issued a recall for 168,149 vehicles equipped with inaccurate Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) labels. Affected models include:
While developing new vehicles, Nissan noticed a discrepancy in the GAWR labels on previous vehicles. These labels indicate the safe weight capacity for the car’s front and rear axles.
These values did not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) because they accounted only for the maximum tire pressure, not both the maximum and manufacturer-recommended pressures. If the weight limits on these labels are incorrect, drivers risk overloading their vehicles. This could increase the risk of a crash. Nissan wrote in a filing with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it is not aware of any warranty claims, accidents, or injuries related to the subject condition.
This issue is most relevant to vehicles that carry heavy cargo, tow trailers, or operate near their payload limits. Drivers who primarily provide average passenger transportation and carry light cargo are generally less likely to be at risk of overloading.
To comply with NHTSA requirements, Nissan will provide updated labels with the correct GAWR values. You can have this service completed free of charge at any Nissan dealership. If you don’t want to make a trip to the dealership, Nissan will also send updated labels to all affected customers with instructions on how to apply them.
Owners with affected vehicles will be notified beginning Sept. 4.
