- Nissan and its Infiniti luxury brand have developed a car audio system that tests your hearing and calibrates sound for you.
- It’s backward-compatible with some cars already in owners’ driveways.
Your hearing and mine are likely different. In my own family, we have two kinds of hearing damage and a musician with perfect pitch. When one of us puts a favorite song on a car’s audio system, we’re each hearing it a little differently.
If only that audio system could be customized.
That’s the thinking behind Nissan’s newest innovation. Nissan’s new Personalized Sound system guides the listener through a hearing test, then configures the car’s audio system precisely for their individual needs.
The company explains, “After downloading the Personalized Sound app from the Google Play store, the program will guide drivers through a hearing test by playing tones of varying loudness and pitch. The driver responds with how well they can hear each sound by tapping on the infotainment screen, and the program creates a bespoke listening experience based on the individual’s hearing profile.”
The process takes about three minutes.
Rather than simply adjust treble, mid, and bass tones, the app “will “precisely tweak a 10-band equalizer with frequencies from 50 hertz to 1,200 hertz.” It’s similar to systems used with some high-end headphones, but it works even on some of Nissan’s least expensive vehicles.
If more than one driver regularly uses a car, they can each set up their own profile.
The app is free, and works with the following vehicles:
