General Motors is introducing a new interface to bring “state-of-the-art graphics, intuitive layouts, and deeply integrated intelligence directly to the cabin.” The new interface will create a customized, clear, and effortless journey for the driver. It will also introduce two features GM has been reluctant to embrace.
The big news first: Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will integrate into the new system.
GM previously said it would abandon both by 2028. An interview with GM Executive Director of Software Product Management Michael Wahlstrom revealed that customer feedback is the reason GM is choosing not to move away from CarPlay and Android Auto. “People really like CarPlay and Android Auto because they’re so user-centric. We heard from customers that they want that same simplicity while still having quick access to everything their vehicle can do. Our next-gen UI brings those together in a cohesive way,” says Wahlstrom.
The 2027 Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra will get the interface first. The technology will then expand across the portfolio. Here’s what the new look entails:
- High contrast displays deliver richer color and sharper depth across navigation, vehicle status, and entertainment apps.
- A split-view home screen features a fully interactive map along with trailering metrics, fuel efficiency data, or media side by side. This allows the driver to browse audio and manage details while keeping their eyes on the map.
- Cluster layouts offer drivers different views of the task at hand.
- Next-gen 3-D driving visualization allows drivers to see what the vehicle sees in real time. Renderings include surrounding traffic, lane markings, and road objects.
- Hands-free activation allows drivers to engage Adaptive Cruise Control and Super Cruise with a single button.
- Drivers can organize their most-used controls for quick access viewing. For customers who prefer tactile feedback, physical controls are still available.
- Non-intrusive calls keep drivers focused. Once a call is accepted, the call timer sits at the top of the display, rather than taking it over.
- Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integrate with the new system, allowing drivers to switch between their devices and features developed specifically for their truck.
- Drivers can monitor key towing metrics and trailering visualization on screen.
- A hitch view camera helps drivers line up their trailer without needing a spotter.
- Terrain cameras offer a glimpse into what’s beneath the car so you can navigate hidden obstacles while off-roading.
- Check trailer lights, testing brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, and running lights all from your phone.
Users can also access Google Gemini, Google Maps, and other Google Maps features via OnStar.
Passengers can enjoy the drive too, with access to streaming and entertainment apps. Polarized screen technology means that only the passenger can view their screen while the vehicle is in motion.
Continuous over-the-air software updates mean that the experience will evolve over time.
