Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk Now Plug-in Hybrid Only

A 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk sits parked on a rocky slope. The SUV faces slightly to our left. It's silver, with a black matte hood to reduce glare and bright blue tow hooks. The Jeep Grand Cherokee with the real off-road chops will also be the most fuel-efficient Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2023.

For the 2022 model year, buyers can also find the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk edition with a 3.6-liter  293-horsepower V6 or a 5.7-liter 357-horsepower V8. Its available air suspension, disconnecting sway bar, and knobby Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires make it the most trail-capable Grand Cherokee. Some of these models may still be on dealer lots if you’re interested.

For 2023, all the off-road prowess is still standard. But the only drivetrain available will be the plug-in hybrid system Jeep calls 4xe (say it “four by E” if you don’t want the Jeep faithful to give you side-eye). That system mates a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine to an electric motor, good for 375 total horsepower and 56 MPGe, or miles per gallon equivalent.

It can travel up to 26 miles on electric power alone before its gasoline engine turns on, according to Jeep.

Jeep hasn’t revealed pricing for the 2023 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk yet. The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk started at $62,880, plus a steep $1,795 for delivery. Other 2023 Grand Cherokee models, which are now available for order on the Jeep website, begin at $41,395.

Otherwise, Jeep has changed the Grand Cherokee little for 2023. Limited and Overland models now get a 10.1-inch touchscreen as standard equipment. Last year, a smaller 8.4-inch model was the basic one, with the 10.1-inch version an option.

Buyers of the Limited trim can now opt for an optional 9-speaker Alpine audio system. Overland and Summit models can be had with a 19-speaker McIntosh system.
