The Hyundai Ioniq, an advanced alternative-power compact vehicle, will be launched next year with a choice of three powertrains, battery-electric power, gas-electric hybrid and gas-electric plug-in EV, the Korean automaker announced. The announcement is part of an effort by the Hyundai-Kia group to become an industry leader in alternative power vehicles.
Based on a new platform, the Hyundai Ioniq will be a compact 4-door, possibly a hatchback as indicated by the steeply raked C-pillar in the teaser profile shot released along with the announcement. The EV version will be powered by a lithium ion battery pack, Hyundai said, but the automaker didn’t give engine details on the two hybrid models other than to say that one would be a plug-in with an EV mode of unspecified range and a more conventional gas-electric hybrid with no plug-in capability.

Hyundai claims the vehicle will be the first production model to offer three different electrified powertrains and that the name itself is a combination of ion, which is an electrically-charged atom, and unique, referring to the different modes of motivation. The vehicle will be revealed in Korea next month and make its auto show debut at Geneva in March.
