The company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that under certain crash conditions, “the front passenger frontal and knee airbags may deploy despite the presence of an occupant (infant in child seat, child, or person smaller than AF5) for whom deployment should be suppressed, increasing the risk of injury.”
According to Honda, the fall out from a natural disaster at the manufacturing plant forced the supplier to alter the “base material” for the circuit board that contains the “seat weight sensor.” This change was not verified by Honda. The new material allowed for more strain on the circuit board, which may lead to “a capacitor cracking and an internal short circuit.” Honda notes that the SRS warning light may come on, but the passenger airbag indicator may not.
Honda initially became aware of a potential issue in January of 2024 and issued a safety recall notice 24V-064. However, the company was not fully aware which vehicles and model years were affected because the supplier miscalculated the production end date.
There have been 228 warranty claims, and no injuries or deaths related to this issue.
To fix the issue, dealers will replace the seat weight sensor with the correct base material.
Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail beginning July 6, 2026.
