Ford Recalls Focus RS and Explorer Over Engine Block Heater

Ford has recalled 2,403 vehicles due to a potential issue with the engine block heater. The block heater may overheat and develop a coolant leak, resulting in a resistive short circuit.

This recall affects some models of the 2016-2018 Ford Focus RS, 2024 Ford Explorer, and 2019 Ford Explorer.

Ford says, “A short circuit in the engine block heater increases the risk of an under-hood fire. The risk is increased when the block heater is plugged into a 110-volt electrical supply without a functional circuit breaker or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) power outlet. This risk only exists when the block heater is plugged in.”

Ford recently issued a similar recall for other models, including its popular Escape SUV.

Warning signs include coolant spots on driveways or garage floors, loss of cabin heat, powertrain unit overheating, or a low coolant level warning indicator. Odor or smoke from heat damage is another sign to look out for.

Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. The recalled engine block heater will be replaced free of charge.
