Ford and its Lincoln luxury arm recalled 1,448,655 vehicles because their rearview cameras may display a distorted or blank image when backing up.
The company tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that “inconsistent rearview camera quality” from 2015 to 2020 has led to many camera failures. The company knows of at least 12,487 warranty claims and five accidents (but no injuries) related to faulty cameras.
So, the company plans to replace over a million cameras to stem the tide of problems.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2015 Ford Explorer
- 2015-2016 Ford C-Max
- 2015-2016 Ford Escape
- 2015-2019 Ford Flex
- 2015-2016 and 2018-1019 Ford Taurus
- 2016 Ford Fusion
- 2020 Ford Mustang
- 2015, 2019 Lincoln MKT
- 2015 Lincoln MKZ
Dealers will inspect each camera and replace those found questionable.
By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.
Manufacturers recall many cars, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Discover if your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy-to-use vehicle identification number (VIN) tool at our recall center.
