- Ford will introduce offers of $0 down payment, 0% interest, and deferred payments for 90 days on many vehicles this month
- The automakers’ employee pricing discounts are ending
When hefty new tariffs hit the auto industry in spring, Ford responded with a program that let most Americans pay what Ford employees pay for the company’s vehicles.
It worked. Ford sales surged 14.2% in the second quarter, “about 10 times the estimated 1.4% industry increase,” according to the automaker.
But Ford and its Lincoln luxury brand have ended the program. In its place comes a new “zero, zero, zero” plan that lets qualified buyers skip the down payment, skip payments for the first 90 days, and pay 0% interest on a 48-month loan.
The company describes it as a way to help shoppers get through the summer. “Many families have seen their savings go toward higher mortgage rates and summer travel costs. They want a new vehicle but also want options that allow them to forgo an upfront down payment,” Ford says.
However, industry insiders say it may be an attempt to help dealers through the summer. Industry publication Automotive News explains, “Many industry experts expect a second-half sales slump as inventories continue to tighten and prices rise because of tariffs on imported vehicles and parts.”
A summer promotion could help keep some foot traffic in dealerships as the anticipated slowdown starts.
