Ford and its Lincoln luxury brand have recalled 312,120 trucks and SUVs because they can lose some braking power suddenly.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2025 Ford Bronco
- 2025 Ford Expedition
- 2025 Ford F-150
- 2025 Ford Ranger
- 2025 Lincoln Navigator
Today’s cars use electronic brake boosters to translate light force on the brake pedal into more intense force on the brakes. Ford tells federal safety officials that the brake booster in these vehicles can “enter into a faulted state while driving, resulting in a loss of brake boost until the EBB module completes a sleep cycle when the vehicle is off.”
Stepping on the brakes hard will still stop the car. Ford says drivers will get a series of warnings as failure occurs, including an audible alert and messages in the instrument cluster. However, the driver will likely never have had to stop the car without the help of the booster before, so they won’t know how to plan for extra braking distance. That could contribute to an accident.
The company says it knows of 37 warranty claims and one accident with no injuries related to the problem.
Dealers will fix the problem by updating the software that drives the brake booster. Some of the recalled vehicles can receive the update over the air. Owners will need to bring others into the dealership to have it installed. Ford will mail notices to let owners know which group they’re in.
This is Ford’s 94th recall of 2025 – a record for a single year. The year is just two-thirds over.
