BMW is recalling 29,119 vehicles due to a potential issue with an engine component that can lead to a fire risk and is advising owners to park their cars outside. Affected models include:
- 2018-2020 BMW 530e xDrive
- 2017-2019 BMW 740Le xDrive
- 2018-2020 BMW 530e iPerformance
- 2016-2018 BMW 330e iPerformance
According to a filing about the issue with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) water can contact the engine starter’s electrical relay, leading to corrosion. Corrosion inside the relay can affect the ability to start the engine. In some cases, this can lead to a short-circuit and possible overheating. In extreme circumstances, this could cause a “thermal event” when the vehicle is in operation or parked with the ignition off, according to the recall filing.
BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue. However, BMW is advising owners to park these cars outside and away from any structures until the starter has been replaced with one of a different design. As with all recalls, the repair is free.
Owners who have already had the starter replaced at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement.
