The OnStar button in every General Motors vehicle will soon call on an AI-powered virtual assistant.
OnStar has been around since the mid-1990s, starting out as a button you’d push to speak to an operator at a GM call center with questions. It’s evolved — and is still evolving.
At GM Forward 2026, the company shared its plans “to bring better, safer, and more capable products” to customers with a focus on technology. GM highlighted OnStar’s 30th anniversary, along with OnStar AI Assistant and the OnStar mobile app, as products to help drivers get more from their vehicles.
OnStar AI Assistant
OnStar is a subscription-based safety, security, and connected vehicle service that has more than 12 million subscribers and was developed by General Motors.
In the coming months, GM will launch the OnStar AI Assistant in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq with more models to follow. The OnStar AI Assistant will be an over-the-air update. According to GM, it will offer “timely, personalized guidance” and will be supplemented with “human support.”
OnStar Mobile App
The new OnStar mobile app will also launch in 2027, replacing the current OnStar Guardian app and the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicle brand apps. GM says this will deliver “a unified experience across vehicles and devices.” The app will combine vehicle management, camera features, and proactive safety features for a “seamless experience.” GM says customers can choose which features to turn on. They can change their choice or turn off features at any time for more privacy. OnStar AI Assistant will also be available in the new app to answer vehicle-specific questions posed by drivers.
