  • Small crossover SUV slotted below Stelvio
  • Features plug-in hybrid technology
  • Based on Jeep Renegade/Fiat 500X platform
  • Alfa specific infotainment features

Alfa Romeo showed a new concept vehicle based on the same small crossover SUV architecture as the Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X. Called the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the new concept foreshadows a production version that will also be the Italian brand’s first plug-in hybrid.

Though its billed as a crossover, the styling is more a sporty hatchback than SUV, taking cues from the Giulietta hatch sold in Europe. The slightly taller ride height, stance and 21-inch wheels of the vehicle also shares some of the look from the Stelvio. The Tonale shares Alfa’s shield-shaped grille and has flowing body contours that give it a racy look.

Sporty cabin

The 4-passenger interior emphasizes the more sporting nature of Alfa Romeo vehicles by its driver-oriented layout, the main focus being the 12.3-inch full digital display behind the steering wheel. The brand’s upscale positioning is also reflected in the use of aluminum accents, leather and Alcantara upholstery.

The center of the dash is occupied by a 10.25-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. Among the unique features developed for the Tonale are two applications specific to the brand. Alfisiti is a lifestyle experience that connects the user to select Alfa clubs and community events including dries, gatherings and meets. Through the app, the user can confirm attendance to gatherings, as well as being able to win VIP access to events sponsored by the automaker. The second is called Paddock, which allows real-time viewing and purchasing of interior and exterior performance upgrades, equipment and even Alfa-brand merchandise and apparel, all of which can be ordered directly with a touch of the screen.

Expanded SUV presence

Alfa Romeo didn’t give specifics on the powertrain or performance, however, it’s likely that power will come from the same PHEV drivetrain introduced on the Jeep Renegade and Compass at the Geneva show. That layout includes a 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor that can deliver up to 240 horsepower. The system also delivers about 30 miles of pure EV range.

No timeline was given on when production will begin, as well as pricing or U.S. export. However, it’s likely Alfa will launch a vehicle based on the concept within the next two years.
