2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee Takes Sting Out of Bygone V8

2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee pair
  • Dodge reintroduces the Super Bee name to the 2027 Charger.
  • It’s the first Super Bee without a V8.
  • The 2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee uses larger turbochargers to help the inline-6 generate 600 horsepower.

You still can’t get a V8 in the reincarnated Dodge Charger, but Dodge is taking a half-step by introducing the 2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee performance model. The Super Bee boosts the output of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 “Sixpack” engine to 600 horsepower, making it not only the most potent Sixpack, but also the most potent Super Bee in the line’s nearly 60-year history.

“With the new 2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee Launch Edition, we’re not just bringing back a legendary badge, we’re honoring that legacy by outperforming every vehicle that’s adorned the Super Bee badge since 1968,” Dodge CEO Matt McAlear boasted to a crowd gathered for its Roadkill Nights in Detroit last week.

The all-wheel-drive (AWD) muscle car was reborn for 2024 in both 4-door sedan and 2-door coupe forms, essentially combining the Challenger and Charger into one model. Scat Pack versions of the Charger Sixpack make 550 hp, but there’s also a fully electric Charger Daytona Scat Pack Plus that makes 630 hp.

Confused? If you want a new V8 Charger but you don’t want an EV Charger, then the Charger Super Bee might be for you.

2027 Dodge Charger Super Bee Differences

Designed to optimize straight-line performance, the Super Bee has larger turbochargers that enable a whopping 200-hp per liter. The twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 generates 600 hp and 531 lb-ft of torque, compared to 550 hp and 531 lb-ft on Scat Pack models.

The extra boost means the Super Bee’s full torque comes on sooner, at 3,000 rpm, and extends through 5,900 rpm. This adds up to quicker sprints, with an estimated zero-to-60-mph time of 3.6 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 11.8 seconds. By comparison, the Charger Scat Pack Plus hits 60 mph in 3.9 seconds and does the quarter-mile sprint in 12.2 seconds.

The additional airflow, modified intakes, and advanced thermal management promise more sustained runs at peak performance. The Super Bee can breathe better, and unique software tuning optimizes performance bits like throttle response and power delivery, among other tweaks, such as a more refined Launch Control function, Dodge says.

Even without the Super Bee decals and badges, it stands out from other Charger Sixpack models with a front face that has larger air intakes and auxiliary radiators to help with cooling and downforce. A larger splitter also defines the fascia, but if those clues don’t give it away, then the massive brakes should. On both the front and back wheels are 16-inch vented rotors, with 6-piston Brembo calipers up front and 4-piston clamps out back.

Dodge says the upgrades — including the 27% larger brake pad surface — provide three times more brake fade resistance than other Charger Sixpacks. In short, they were designed for “demanding track use.”

2027 Super Bee Wheels and Handling

Dodge engineers didn’t stop at sprints when it came to the Super Bee. The Super Bee Launch Edition has fat 20-by-11-inch forged wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 tires sized at 305/35ZR20 at all four corners. The wide summer tires were designed to maximize grip in the all-wheel-drive Charger Super Bee.

The chassis has been strengthened over other Chargers, with greater stiffness specifically for more precise steering. Dual-valve adaptive dampers have “significantly more” damping force than past iterations, and the system operates with constant adjustments regardless of drive mode. Spring rates have increased, so it will be a firmer ride, and the rear stabilizer bar is 20% stiffer so there should be less understeer to feel and operate more like a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) car.

There is even a dedicated RWD Mode button that lets drivers switch on the fly from AWD to RWD. A Track Mode stiffens the damper tuning to the max, and calibrates steering to be even more tightly wound, all to give the Super Bee greater grip in corners. A Drag Mode function aims for straight-line optimization.

Launch Control has a Torque Reserve feature that builds boost on the starting line without overpowering the brakes. Through Dodge engineering wizardry with the ignition timing, you essentially get all the torque ready to go and no turbo lag for full burst off the line.

There’s Race Prep to keep things cool, Line Lock to do burnouts and pretend you’re cool, and other goodies like an in-car forward-facing 1080p camera recording your coolness at 60 frames per second.
