The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 is an extraordinary machine, with 429 horsepower from a 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine mated to a hybrid system, a 4.9-second zero-60 time, and optional third-row seating.
But if you’re willing to wait a couple of years, Mercedes can up the ante.
The brand this week released details on the 2026 version of the AMG GLE 53. That’s right, the 2026. Not the 2025.
A year or so after the next presidential term begins, the AMG GLE will gain Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) power. Available as a traditional SUV and a sleeker SUV Coupe, the model will get a peak output of 536 horsepower thanks to an upgrade to the engine (boosted to 443 horses) and a plug-in system adding more power.
“Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes just 4.6 seconds and only ends at an electronically limited speed of 155 mph,” Mercedes’ AMG division says. As a PHEV, it will be capable of driving some distance on electric power alone. But Mercedes hasn’t revealed how much.
An all-new Ride Control+ air suspension “offers a balanced combination of adequate acoustic damping for purely electric driving in combination with the sporty character typical of AMG vehicles.”
Mercedes hasn’t released pricing, but they may not have done the math on inflation three years from now. We expect the model to approach the $100,000 line.
Hybrid-specific badges will identify it from the rear. Up front, it will wear an AMG-specific grille and additional vents in the front fascia “to direct airflow to the additional heat exchanger.”
Inside, there appear to be very few changes. Mercedes says, “The MBUX infotainment system showcases hybrid-specific displays and functions,” as though the only differences are the screen displays.
But they have plenty of time to change their minds.
