2019 Honda Insight Prototype Slated for Detroit

UPDATE: You can now read our first review of the 2019 Honda Insight

Honda is bringing back a dedicated hybrid model in the form of the third generation Insight, shown as a prototype for a 2019 model year comeback. The newest Insight will be a 5-passenger sedan positioned between the Civic and Accord. The first-generation Insight was a 2-seat hatchback followed later by a larger 4-door 5-passenger hatchback.

The all-new 2019 Honda Insight will use the latest version of the company’s 2-motor hybrid system and is slated to be launched next summer. The powertrain features a 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine as a generator, allowing the vehicle to function purely on electric power. Honda says it expects to get an EPA combined fuel economy rating in excess of 50 mpg.

“The new 2019 Honda Insight signals we are entering a new era of electrification with a new generation of Honda products that offer customers the benefits of advanced powertrain technology without the traditional trade-offs in design, premium features or packaging,” said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior vice president of Automobile Sales and general manager of the Honda Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The Honda Insight is anticipated to receive fuel economy ratings competitive with the best hybrids in the segment, with styling that will have universal appeal inside and out and best-in-class passenger volume.”

Lithium-ion battery pack under rear seat

The new Insight has its lithium ion battery pack positioned beneath the rear seat, which allows for a full-size trunk and a 60/40 split folding rear bench seat. Honda believes the 2019 Honda Insight will offer class-leading passenger space along with a host of premium features including leather seating, an 8-inch touchscreen and a 7-inch digital driver display. Insight will also offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The all-new hybrid will be built at Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana, plant where Civic and CR-V models are currently being produced and is expected to go on sale nationwide later this year.

This newest addition to the Honda lineup is part of a broader electrification initiative announced by the Japanese manufacturer in which two-thirds of the vehicles offered globally by 2030 would be electrified. It will be the fifth such vehicle brought to the market by Honda over the past year.
