Motive force for the new Lexus LC 500 is supplied by a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that makes 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque which heads to the rear wheels via a new paddle-shift 10-speed automatic transmission. The LC 500h introduces the automaker’s new Multi Stage Hybrid System that it will share with the new 2018 Lexus LS 500h Hybrid Sedan. It pairs a 3.5-liter Atkinson Cycle V6 and two electric motor-generators to create a total of 354 horses.

Like the LS 500h, the LC 500h retains the planetary-type CVT from previous-generation Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive but teams it with a 4-speed automatic transmission that gives the car a total of 10 ratios. The new Multi Stage Hybrid System allows for more electric assist to be rolled in at low speeds, endowing the Coupe with what Lexus promises will be impressive acceleration. An air-cooled lithium-ion battery pack slotted between the rear seat and the aft bulkhead also allows the LC 500h to reach speeds up to 87 mph on pure electric power, although there’s still no word on its EV-only range.
