Throwing down a performance benchmark gauntlet, Dodge announced its upcoming Hellcat engine in the 2015 Challenger SRT will produce 707 horsepower. That’s more than the Ford Mustang GT500 or Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, making the Challenger SRT the new king of the segment. The official power numbers for the supercharged Hellcat V8 check in at the aforementioned 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. For the sake of comparison, the 2014 SRT Viper (which will soon fly under the Dodge flag once again) squeezes 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque out of a naturally aspirated V10.

Two key fobs

New for 2015, the 6.2 liter V8 Hellcat engine is Dodge’s most powerful engine ever assembled by the factory. It’s also the first supercharged Hemi V8. The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat will come with two different key fobs – a black one, which limits engine output to 500 horsepower and disables the launch control, and a red fob that unlocks the full 707 horsepower experience.  Also new for 2015 is the use of the TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. Don’t worry, a 6-speed manual is offered (and is expected to be the preferred choice), too.

In addition to the massive horsepower under hood, the 2015 Dodge Challenger has been updated inside and out. The changes, including new head and taillamps, incorporate styling cues last seen in the 1971 model. The 2015 Dodge Challenger is expected to roll into dealerships in the third quarter of this year. Pricing is expected to be announced closer to when it goes on sale.
