Ready to reassert its presence in the critical global SUV segment, the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee will have a starting price of $23,990 when it goes on sale here in the fall. That figure, for a base Sport 4×2 model, is $400 below the outgoing Jeep Liberty that it replaces. At $25,990, the Cherokee Sport 4×4 also will start with a similar sticker advantage. Pricing for other members of the lineup begins at $25,490 for the Cherokee Latitude 4×2 and $28,990 for the Cherokee Limited 4×2, with the step up to 4×4 also adding $2,000 to each. The Trail Rated Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk 4×4 starts at $30,490. Those numbers will position the newest Jeep family member roughly in the middle of an extremely competitive niche that includes rivals like the Chevy Equinox, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4 and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Spun from the Chrysler/Fiat Compact U.S. Wide (CUS-W) platform, all members of the new Cherokee lineup will come with a standard Tigershark 2.4-liter MultiAir 4-cylinder engine that makes 184 horsepower and is backed by a class-exclusive 9-speed automatic transmission — a combo that will help the 5-passenger front-drive Cherokee return up to 31 mpg on the highway. All but the Sport models can be fitted with an optional 3.2-liter/271-horse Pentastar V6.

Even at Sport level, the 2014 Cherokee’s standard feature set is expansive and includes a full array of power assists, air conditioning, a Uconnect media center with a 5.0-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Hill Start Assist and 10 airbags. The roster of standards as well as options rises progressively through the Latitude — which is expected to be the Cherokee volume leader — and leather-lined Limited, to add things like more powerful audio systems, an 8.4-inch Uconnect Access HD radio with navigation setup, dual-pane CommandView panoramic sunroof and the choice of two different 4-wheel drive systems — Jeep Active Drive I and dual-range Jeep Active Drive II — both with the Selec-Terrain drive mode selector.
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk offers a collection of features for those seeking the ultimate off-road capability: uniquely focused exterior/interior styling touches; dedicated suspension tuning and wheel/tire fitment; dual-range Jeep Active Drive Lock 4×4 system with Selec-Terrain and a locking rear differential; Selec-Speed Control with Hill-ascent Control and Hill-descent Control; plus skid plates an additional 1.0-inch of ground clearance.
