Predicted Resale Value After 5 Years of Ownership: 40.3%
This is a pretty good year to be a Toyota hybrid. All three of the cars topping our list of Best Hybrids for 2020 come from Toyota. At the very top of the resale value leader podium, stands the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime.
A plug-in hybrid that can run for 25 miles on electricity alone, the 2020 Prius Prime earns bragging rights in lots of appealing places. For significant starters, it’s got a 640-mile range when you combine a full charge with a full tank of gasoline. Better than a pure electric, it works like a “normal” gasoline-powered car when the electric charge runs out, and better than a gas-powered car, the Prius Prime’s engine works with the car’s electric motor to achieve 54 miles per gallon city/highway combined. The Prius Prime will also get you carpool-lane access and a federal tax credit.
The driving impressions from our Expert Review of the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime tell a tale of quiet comfort, “The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is impressively comfortable. Smooth, hushed and with an uncanny ability to absorb bumps, this Prius has near Lexus-like levels of serenity.” But not at the cost of some level of performance from its 121-horsepower drivetrain: “Despite what you might think, the Prius Prime isn’t slow. With its gas/electric powertrain, this Toyota is quick off the line. Passing power is adequate, though the gasoline engine and continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) will drone when you punch the accelerator.”
With an exterior that you’ll either be passionate or pass-on-it about, this year’s Prius Prime adds 5-passenger seating, Apple CarPlay and Alexa capabilities to the interior. Toyota Safety Sense P, which bundles pre-collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning/lane-keeping assist as standard equipment.
