What Is Dielectric Grease?

Replacing Spark plugs in an engine.

Dielectric grease is a silicone-based lubricant applied to electrical contact points to insulate against moisture and corrosion, overheating, and debris. Locations around the car where you would put this are spark plugs and boots, bulb sockets, battery terminals, and other electrical connections.

Since it insulates instead of conducts, it’s best applied to tight connections, and a little goes a long way.

Dielectric grease is typically applied during a tune-up or replacement of these parts, which is why you may see it referred to as “tune-up grease.”

Dielectric grease can be purchased at auto parts stores and applied in your garage, or see our Service Advisor tool to find a maintenance shop that will use it during your next tune-up.
