Four-wheel drive (4WD) refers to the number of wheels on a 2-axle vehicle powered by the engine through the drivetrain to provide the vehicle with motion.
Typically, vehicles with 4WD include light-duty pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and vans. While some models may employ 4WD full-time, most must be deliberately shifted into and out of 4WD by the driver, often to traverse rugged, off-road terrain.
