The 2024 VinFast VF 6 is a brand-new subcompact SUV with an all-electric drivetrain.
The VinFast name probably won’t be familiar. It’s a new car company from Vietnam, and this VF 6 is the smallest of its products so far. There’s also (in order of size) the VF 7, VF 8, and VF 9 — each one an electric SUV.
The 2024 VF 6 was styled in collaboration with an Italian design house (Torino Design, whose clients include Alfa Romeo, BMW, and Ferrari) and is similar in size to the Chevrolet Bolt EUV.
The VinFast VF 6 is an all-new fully electric compact SUV.
We expect the 2024 VinFast VF 6 to start at around $30,000. That would put it in the same region as the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, which is priced from $27.2K, and the Hyundai Kona Electric from $33.5K. The slightly bigger 2023 Kia Niro EV is close to $40K.
That price would be for the 2024 VF 6 Eco model, with cloth/simulated leather (vegan) upholstery.
A more powerful, better-equipped alternative is the 2024 VF 6 Plus. This one comes with a panoramic sunroof and simulated leather seating surfaces as standard. It could be around $35K.
VinFast has an unusual purchase scheme. Customers buy most of the vehicle but pay a subscription for the battery. The company says a more typical method may be offered in the future.
We expect the 2024 VinFast VF 6 to go on sale late in 2024. The VF 6 made its U.S. debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2022.
The VF 6 is likely to offer at least 250 miles of range. For reference, the Chevy Bolt EUV has a range of 247 miles, the Hyundai Kona Electric runs for 258 miles, and the Kia Niro EV can manage 253 miles.
Looking at the presumed competition can also give us some idea of charging times. When connected to a fast charger, both the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV can go from 10% to 80% in around 45 minutes. The Chevy Bolt EUV is a lot slower, taking over an hour — we expect the VF 6 SUV to be more in line with its Korean counterparts.
The 2024 VF 6 Eco has 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Bearing in mind that a gasoline-powered subcompact SUV like the Honda HR-V has a perfectly adequate 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque, then the VF 6 Eco has the potential to be quite sprightly. Even sprightlier, the 2024 VF 6 Plus comes with 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque.
The VF 6 will feature a single electric motor driving just the front wheels, with no option for all-wheel drive (AWD). That’s OK; the other all-electric subcompact SUVs mentioned here follow the same formula.
The new-car warranty and powertrain coverage lasts for 10 years, plus a 10-year/unlimited mileage or lifetime warranty for the battery.
We don't have consumer reviews for this vehicle.

Not until 2024, since production is slated to begin later in 2023.
Neither version of the VF 6 SUV offers all-wheel drive. Its single electric motor drives just the front wheels.
