Pros

  • Up to 348 miles of electric range
  • Lightning-quick acceleration
  • Balanced handling
  • Comfortable ride
  • Sleek styling
  • “Falcon Wing” doors

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Odd steering wheel
  • Not available in all 50 states
  • Available third row is tight
  • No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay

What's New?

  • No notable changes

The Tesla Model X is one of the most desirable of all luxury SUVs. It’s not quite like anything else on the market with its potent electric powertrain, outstanding range, “Falcon Wing” doors, and unique, high-tech interior. On top of that, it’s pretty practical due to its large cargo hold and available 3-row seating.

There are two models of the Model X available: Long Range and Plaid. The Long Range model is the more practical choice because of its lower price and longer range. However, the high-performance Plaid model delivers the quickest acceleration of any production SUV, achieving a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds.

The world of electric luxury SUVs is growing with entries like the Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, and the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq. However, we haven’t seen a competitor yet that’s anything quite like the Model X in terms of performance and technology. If you want a Tesla SUV but the Model X is out of your price range, consider the much more affordable Tesla Model Y.

2022 Tesla Model X Pricing

2022 Tesla Model X pricing starts at $48,318 for the Model X Long Range Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $116,190 when new. The range-topping 2022 Model X Plaid Sport Utility 4D starts at $54,910 today, originally priced from $140,190.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Tesla Model X models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Tesla Model X

The Tesla Model X can serve duty as a practical family crossover while delivering genuine driving thrills with little compromise. Even in the base Long Range model, the Model X has a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. Electric torque is confidently delivered to all four wheels thanks to standard all-wheel drive.

Upgrading to the Plaid model gives the Model X supercar-like performance with a fantastic 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds. It also gets torque vectoring all-wheel drive to make the 1,020 horsepower generated by its three electric motors more manageable. There are few vehicles in the world that can combine pulse-pounding performance with everyday practicality like the Model X Plaid.

The ride of the Model X is smooth and gentle, thanks to standard air suspension. The brakes and steering of this SUV are sporty enough to be a good match with the lively electric powertrain, but they’re also suitable for relaxed, everyday driving. Overall, the way the Model X drives strikes a near-perfect balance of comfort and performance.

Interior Comfort

The interior of the Tesla Model X isn’t like any other SUV. It does resemble the inside of the Tesla Model S sedan, but it has a few unique touches. One of the first things you’ll notice when you sit in the Model X is the unconventional steering wheel. This U-shaped wheel resembles a yoke in the cockpit of an airplane. It certainly takes getting used to, but it also creates a clear view of the digital gauge cluster.

The next thing you’ll notice is the massive 17-inch infotainment screen. This screen controls just about every function of the Model X. It’s slick and user-friendly, but it does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Behind this screen is essentially a gaming PC, and there’s an additional 8-inch rear entertainment screen. The built-in gaming system has processing power comparable to the PlayStation 5. Wireless controller compatibility makes it easy for anyone in the SUV to join in.

The seats in the Model X are supportive and comfortable. You can have seating for up to 5, 6, or 7 people. The 5-seat, 2-row configuration is standard, and you can add a third row with or without second-row captain’s chairs.

As you’d expect for an SUV this expensive, standard interior features are generous. You get a panoramic glass roof, heated seats for every passenger, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 3-zone automatic climate control, 22-speaker premium audio, and much more.

The cargo space in the Model X is very generous in the 5-seat configuration. Cargo space is still decent with the optional 3-row seating but improves greatly if you fold the back seats down.

Exterior Styling

The Tesla Model X is a sleek and stylish SUV. It borrows design cues from the Model S sedan in the form of a futuristic SUV. It uses clean lines, a handsome light signature, and stylish wheel designs.

One of the unique things about the Model X is its rear “Falcon Wing” doors. These work like old-school “gull-wing” doors, which are hinged on top and open vertically. However, these Falcon Wing doors are more articulate and can adjust to get around any obstacles. That means you don’t need to worry about the doors hitting the car next to you or the ceiling of your garage.

The size of the Tesla Model X is similar to other midsize 3-row luxury SUVs like the Lincoln Aviator, Acura MDX, and Audi Q7.

Favorite Features

PLAID
The high-performance Plaid model is the quickest accelerating production SUV with a 0-60 mph time of 2.5 seconds and a top speed of 163 mph.

FALCON WING DOORS
The rear doors use a unique “Falcon Wing” design that opens upward from the roof. They automatically articulate based on the space available around the doors.

Standard Features

The standard Long Range trim of the Tesla Model X is very well-equipped. The standard electric powertrain is a dual-motor system with all-wheel drive and a range of up to 348 miles on a full charge.

Standard interior features include heated seats (for every seat), cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, a customizable digital gauge cluster, a 17-inch infotainment system with navigation, 22-speaker premium audio, an 8-inch rear entertainment screen, gaming capabilities with wireless controller compatibility, tri-zone automatic climate control, two wireless charging pads, and a yoke steering wheel.

Exterior features include 20-inch Cyberstream wheels, LED lighting, rear Falcon Wing rear doors, automatic front doors, a power liftgate, and a panoramic moonroof.

The standard Autopilot system creates a semi-autonomous driving experience on the highway, but you still need to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. It bundles features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, and more.

Every Model X comes with one free year of Premium Connectivity. This suite of tech features includes live traffic, video streaming with popular services like Netflix and Hulu, music streaming, an internet browser, and more.

Factory Options

The Model X is upgradable to a tri-motor, high-performance Plaid model. On top of the extra motor and improved performance, Plaid also adds torque-vectoring all-wheel drive.

Six-seat and 7-seat configurations are available for both trims of the Model X. Other options for both trims include 22-inch Turbine wheels, Black and White and Cream interior color schemes, and Full Self-Driving Capability. Full Self-Driving adds more advanced driver assistance features like Navigate on Autopilot, Autopark, Summon, Auto Lane Change, and more.

Battery Power, Charge Times, and Range

The Model X is available with a 2-motor electric powertrain in the Long Range model or a 3-motor setup in the Plaid model. The Long Range model has an electric range of up to 348 miles, and it’s a strong performer with 670 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds.

With the 3-motor Plaid model, the range drops to 333 miles, and the acceleration quickens to a 2.5-second 0-60 mph time. It produces an astounding output of 1,020 horsepower, and Tesla says its quarter-mile time is 9.9 seconds.

All-wheel drive is standard in the Model X, and the Plaid model gets a more sophisticated torque-vectoring AWD system. In both models, you lose range if you opt for the available 22-inch wheels.
