Pros

If cutting-edge design and a green footprint override the need for interior utility and real off-road ability, the 2019 Tesla Model X is the perfect fit. Blistering off-the-line speed will impress all lucky enough to experience it, and the Tesla name carries significant clout.

Cons

Both the Audi e-tron and Jaguar I-Pace offer decent range, a lower price tag and a traditional dealer network. A gasoline or hybrid SUV is faster to refuel (two minutes vs. 60), and an SUV like the Land Rover Discovery or Jeep Grand Cherokee can go places the Tesla will never know.

What's New?

For 2019, the Tesla Model X drops the old naming designation and creates a simplified trim lineup: Model X Standard, Long Range and Performance. Autopilot is now standard, and we’ve heard rumors of a revised dash and interior appearing before the 2019 model year ends.

Although a number of luxury brands are now touting electric-crossover SUVs, the 2019 Tesla Model X was first out of the gate, and it still offers greater range and performance than the Audi e-tron or Jaguar I-Pace. Able to travel up to 325 miles on a single charge and achieve 60 mph in less than three seconds, the Model X makes owning an electric vehicle a viable alternative to a gasoline-powered model. Unconventional features include a set of nifty but impractical Falcon Wing rear doors, a self-driving mode, a giant tablet-like touch screen and floating pedestal seats. On the practical side, the Model X isn’t big on 3rd-row legroom, and its 2nd-row seats don’t fold down, severely limiting cargo space. It’s also pretty pricey.

2019 Tesla Model X Pricing

2019 Tesla Model X pricing starts at $28,901 for the Model X Standard Range Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $72,650 when new. The range-topping 2019 Model X P100D Sport Utility 4D starts at $32,167 today, originally priced from $139,200.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2019 Tesla Model X models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Driving the Tesla Model X

In everyday driving, you’d be hard-pressed to distinguish among the Model X’s two trim levels. The ride is smooth and comfortable, power is abundant, and accommodations are fairly comfortable, so long as you’re not jammed into the 3rd-row seat. Responsive steering feedback helps this big-crossover SUV feel a bit smaller and more agile than one would think, making the Model X an easy vehicle to live with. The real thrill in owning a Model X, however, is the instantaneous rush of speed that comes when you put your foot down. On the Model X Performance, the available Ludicrous Mode delivers 100 percent of the electric motor’s power to the wheels, delivering a breathtaking zero-to-60-mph run in 2.9 seconds. The less expensive Model X Long Range is a bit slower, achieving 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Interior Comfort

Inside, the Model X is essentially identical to the Tesla Model S sedan. That means comfort is high, as is material quality, but fit can be inconsistent. It also means the controls for the climate, audio and other functions are electronic and found on a massive 17-inch touch screen that makes up the majority of the dashboard. It’s the largest screen in the business, and it’s fast to react and simple to use. Also unique are the Tesla’s power-operated Falcon Wing doors that open up instead of out. They’ll wow your neighbors but can be frustrating in tight spaces as well as problematic during bouts of heavy snow or rain.

Exterior Styling

Much of the Tesla’s appeal is that it looks like nothing else on the road. Well, except for another Tesla. When viewed from the front, the 2019 Tesla Model X is almost indistinguishable from its sexy sedan brother, the Model S, which is still one of the best-looking cars around. And the family resemblance continues with the SUV’s steep windshield that extends up over the roof, flush chrome door handles and fastback roofline. However, while the Model S pleases the eyes with a low silhouette and wide stance, when viewed from some angles the Model X looks awkwardly tall and a bit slab-sided. The Falcon Wing doors also negate the ability to install a roof rack.

Favorite Features

17-INCH INFOTAINMENT SCREEN
If you’re all about cutting-edge technology, the Model X’s massive tablet-like 17-inch center screen will blow you away. The pinch-and-swipe touch screen controls most of the car’s functions including infotainment, climate control, navigation and various functions such as Ludicrous and Insane Mode.

AUTOPILOT
Combining external sensors and cameras with an advanced GPS mapping system, the Tesla Model X can practically drive itself. Capable of operating the brakes, accelerator and steering, the Model X can operate without input from the driver, although the system is smart enough to alert said driver when he needs to take back control.

Standard Features

Standard features on the Model X Standard include all-wheel drive, an adaptive air suspension, Autopilot semi-autonomous driving mode, 12-way power front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, 17-inch touch-screen display, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, LED headlights and fog lights, power rear Falcon Wing doors, a power liftgate, an air-filtration system, leather interior trim, 17-speaker audio system, Bluetooth and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning and blind-spot warning. Seating is a 5-passenger/2-row affair. The battery and drive unit are covered by an 8-year/unlimited mile warranty, while the rest of the car comes with a 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty.

Factory Options

A third row is optional as are 2nd-row captain’s chairs, so the new Model X can be configured as a 5-, 6- or 7-passenger SUV. Options are limited to a $5,000 advanced Autopilot upgrade that allows for autonomous city driving, as well as stop sign and stoplight recognition. The Performance trim can be equipped with Ludicrous mode for an additional $20,000. Other options include upgraded wheels, paint colors and interior seat color.

Engine & Transmission

The 2019 Tesla Model X uses two AC electric motors powering all four wheels. The motors derive power from a 100-kWh lithium-ion battery. The Standard setup provides up to 250 miles of range and attains 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The Model X Long Range increases the range to 325 miles and 4.4 second 0-60 time. The Performance uses the same setup, only with slightly less range (305 miles) and a 3.4-second zero-to-60 mph-time. The Performance model also opens the door to the Ludicrous Mode option that drops that time to 2.7 seconds. Charging times with a standard 240-volt outlet is around 10 hours or just over one hour at a Tesla Supercharging station.
