Dashboard warning lights are your car’s way of communicating important information about its systems. Here are some common lights and what they mean:
Check Engine Light: Indicates an issue with the engine or emissions system. While the car may still run, you should have it checked as soon as possible to prevent further damage. If the light is red or blinking, pull over as soon as possible and turn off the engine.
Battery Warning Light: Indicates an issue with the charging system. If this light comes on, your car may lose power soon. You may want to stop and ask other drivers if they have jumper cables.
Oil Pressure Light: Indicates a low oil level, which can lead to severe engine damage over time. If the light reactivates after adding oil, it may indicate a larger problem, such as an engine leak.
Temperature Light: Warns that your engine is overheating. Stop immediately and let the engine cool.
Make sure you pay attention to the lights’ colors as well. Red lights indicate issues that require immediate attention. Amber/yellow lights warn of non-emergency issues. Green/blue lights are functional and informational.
