If your taste for luxury and comfort rivals your need for speed, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE triplets have your name written all over them. The GLE’s interior is roomy enough for the family, but what’s under the hood is just for you.
If performance and value trump pedigree and exclusivity, you can get a faster 0-60 time from a BMW X5 M, and more performance from an $88,000, 707-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. You might also find an all-electric SUV like the Tesla Model X to be worth considering.
The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE43, 63 and 63 S all carry over largely unchanged. An all-new GLE is expected in 2020.
While Mercedes-Benz is known for luxury, it’s the AMG division that gives the German manufacturer’s lineup the power enthusiasts crave. The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE is one such example, a 5-passenger midsize-crossover SUV with the muscle and moves of a high-performance sedan. On its own, the GLE is an impressive performer, but when equipped with AMG’s turbocharged engines, specially tuned suspension and added visual embellishments, it becomes an SUV to covet, not just collect. There are three Mercedes-AMG models, the least expensive being the 385-horsepower GLE43 starting around $70,000. For a fair bit more cash, the GLE63 and GLE63 S add a twin-turbocharged V8 exceeding 500 horsepower. That’s enough muscle to worry the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne, two rivals that are well matched to the GLE.
2019 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG GLE pricing starts at $28,796 for the Mercedes-AMG GLE GLE 43 4MATIC Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $69,145 when new. The range-topping 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE GLE 63 S Sport Utility 4D starts at $36,595 today, originally priced from $111,195.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2019 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG GLE models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.
Pick the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE43, and you’ll have an SUV that can outperform just about any other competitor in its price range, yet still deliver a comfortable ride, impressive features and head-turning good looks. Dish out another $30,000 to $50,000, and the GLE63 and GLE63 S take the performance figures into supercar territory. We were quite happy with the power and pricing of our GLE43, its twin-turbocharged V6 engine pumping out 385 horsepower and netting around 22 mpg on the highway. But we know there are those who will always want the best, and so the twin-turbocharged V8 in the AMG 63 S awaits. With 577 horsepower and 561 lb-ft of torque, this mean machine can rocket to 60 mph in a scant 4.1 seconds. Its taut suspension, massive wheel/tire combo and powerful brakes ensure that power won’t get you into trouble, at least while observing the posted speed limit.
As they’re part of the 2019 GLE lineup overall, these AMG variants retain the standard model’s 2-row/5-passenger setup and layout. As we note in our review of the regular 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE, this midsize-luxury SUV stands out for its ample room for passengers and cargo. Rear-seat passengers are treated to over 38 inches of legroom, and rear-cargo space is commendable at 38.2 cubic feet with rear seats up and over 80 with them folded. Nice touches include a sport steering wheel, brushed-aluminum pedals and AMG-exclusive instruments. As with the standard GLE, the driver’s seat is commanding and comfortable.
Part of the AMG GLE’s appeal is that is looks much like a normal GLE model, that is, until it lays tracks up the freeway onramp. From that vantage, you’ll see at least one of the distinctions of this performance model, and among its most visible giveaways: quad chrome-tipped exhaust outlets. Other bits include a unique front end with large air intakes, chrome underguards and a black diffuser in back. Big, 20-inch wheels with black accents also make a statement (the AMG GLE63 S rolls on 21s). Pragmatically, a power tailgate is standard, as are power-folding side mirrors.
THEY CAN TOW, TOO
An SUV that’s fast but little else isn’t really worthy of the title “SUV.” That’s why Mercedes-Benz made sure its AMG GLE models can tow up to 7,200 pounds plus fit five adults or a week’s worth of luggage.
MERCEDES-AMG GLE43
Massive horsepower and speed are fine, but really where are you ever going to get a chance to use it legally? The 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE43 has plenty of power, a reasonable price tag and a fierce look that lets everyone know you’re driving something special.
In addition to its performance powertrain and hardware-like air suspension, the "base" model in this lineup, the AMG GLE43, includes a power tailgate, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, power sunroof and the Premium Package 1. Optional on standard GLEs, this package bundles key features like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, Harman Kardon premium audio, and an infotainment system with navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. Safety systems include the ability to automatically apply the brakes if a collision appears imminent, crosswind assist to aid in driving amid strong winds, and trailer-stability assist. You’ll still have to pay extra for leather.
With the GLE63 and GLE63 S, buyers get more features and more hand craftsmanship, such as the twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Nappa leather upholstery is standard, as is an active curve system for better cornering and comfort. Heated and cooled cup holders can be ordered for front-seat occupants, as can heated and massaging front seats. Everyone will enjoy the available Bang & Olufsen sound system, in-car Wi-Fi, panoramic roof and heated rear seats. Adaptive cruise control, active blind-spot assist and lane-keep assist are just some of the 2019 Mercedes-AMG GLE’s available driver-assist and safety features.
The engines in these high-performance GLE models are blessed by AMG, Mercedes’ performance arm. The AMG GLE43 has a twin-turbo V6 that Mercedes says is "enhanced" by AMG, while the GLE63 and GLE63 S feature twin-turbo V8 engines that are the more traditional handcrafted powerplants. All AMG GLE models feature Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel-drive system with a permanent 40:60 front/rear torque split for a sports-car feel. All feature the Dynamic Select system with switchable drive modes, from Sport and Comfort to Slippery. The AMG GLE43 uses a 9-speed automatic transmission that performs better than other 9-speeds we’ve tried, while the GLE63 duo uses a slick 7-speed. All have a defeatable start/stop system that cuts engine power at idle.
