2024 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG EQE Review

Colin Ryan specializes in writing about new cars. He has done this for the Los Angeles Times, Variety, Kelley Blue Book, Autotrader, Popular Mechanics, Mazda and Lexus customer magazines, plus a bunch of enthusiast sites and publications. And he spent several years as a staff writer at BBC Top Gear magazine. During this zig-zag of a career trajectory, he has driven everything from budget Malaysian hatchbacks (yes, they exist) to scarily expensive Italian exotica.

Pros

  • Mercedes lux, tech, prestige
  • 298-mile maximum range
  • Roomy cabin

Cons

  • Charging speed is just OK

What's New?

  • Improved brake feel
  • Greater efficiency, ranges
  • AMG EQE joins lineup

The 2024 Mercedes-EQ EQE is a plush and hushed all-electric midsize luxury sedan with a maximum range of 298 miles. Pricing starts at $107,950.

It’s plush and hushed, spacious and prestigious. The EQE Sedan melds traditional Mercedes-Benz values with contemporary electric vehicle technology. It’s a winning combination, earning the EQE a spot among our highest-rated electric luxury vehicles. We’re impressed by the real-world ranges, safety equipment, and things like the super-wide Hyperscreen infotainment display, in addition to the high-quality materials and silky ride. Just because there’s an E in the name, and this is a premium midsize sedan, don’t think that Mercedes-Benz has merely taken an E-Class and swapped in an electric drivetrain. The EQE is built on a dedicated platform developed especially for electric vehicles. The combustion-powered E-Class and the all-electric EQE SUV are both reviewed separately.

What's New for 2024

Following the EQE Sedan’s debut last year, there are a few minor improvements this year, along with the AMG EQE variant (which made its official debut as a 2024 model). Mercedes-Benz says the braking system’s energy regeneration function has been tweaked, resulting in a more natural pedal feel. A heat pump becomes standard, taking some of the cabin climate control work off the battery by scavenging heat from the drivetrain and redirecting it. All-wheel-drive setups can now disconnect and reconnect the front motor automatically according to the conditions, helping to optimize energy use. The charge port door is now power operated, while a 110-volt/240-volt charging cable becomes standard. The infotainment system is upgraded from 4G to 5G, and the EQE 500 4Matic gains the wall-to-wall Hyperscreen as standard.

2024 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG EQE Pricing

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG EQE has a starting sticker price of $107,950.

There’s some strong competition. The new-for-2024 BMW i5 starts just the right side of $70K, with the Genesis Electrified G80 kicking off closer to $75K. Looking beyond the most direct competitors, there’s some price overlap with the Lucid Air and Tesla Model S. None of these machines qualifies for a federal tax credit, but the rules and landscape are always changing. Audi is also coming out with an A6 e-tron.

Before buying a new EQE electric luxury sedan, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should be paying. As for resale value, we expect the EQE Sedan to outperform the electric car average. Recouping more money when you sell a vehicle can mean a bigger down payment and lower monthly payments on your next one.

Power, Ride, and Handling

Imagine a midsize luxury sedan that’s quieter and silkier than a Mercedes. Now imagine it’s a Mercedes. Such is the power of electricity. The popular EQE 350 4Matic isn’t much quicker than a comparable, gas-powered E-Class — both can go from 0-60 mph in about six seconds — but the EQE does it so effortlessly. There’s no engine noise or vibration, no shifting of gears, just instant and seamless power delivered almost silently. It’s addictive.

With more than a thousand extra pounds to manage, the EQE may not ride quite as softly over some roads as the E-Class, but it still qualifies as one of the smoothest-riding electric cars we’ve driven. And oh, is it quiet. We’ve also found it easy around town and in parking lots, thanks in no small part to the optional and highly recommended rear-wheel steering that gives the EQE the tighter turning radius of a smaller car but also enhances stability on the highway and adds greater poise on twisting roads. Mercedes says they’ve improved braking feel and response for 2024, which would address our biggest disappointment with last year’s debut model.

The EQE Sedan lineup includes more powerful models, too. The EQE 500 4Matic can move from a standstill to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds, while the high-performance AMG EQE delivers up to 677 horsepower and can rocket to 60 mph in closer to three seconds.

High-Tech, Deep-Luxury Interior

It’s difficult to know whether to ooh or ahh first. The oohs are for the gadgets, like the full-width Hyperscreen. The ahhs happen when you settle into the supremely comfortable seats and run a hand over the fine cabin materials. We also like the overall interior design — modern yet welcoming.

There’s more space in here than the already roomy E-Class. And with no transmission tunnel encroaching on floor space, rear passengers have plenty of room to stretch out. Just be sure to bend down a little more than usual when climbing in, because the roofline swoops down quite markedly.

Unlike the larger EQS sedan, which has a hatchback like the Porsche Panamera, this EQE employs a conventional trunk. At 11 cubic feet, it’s on the small side. The BMW i5’s trunk area measures 17.3 cubic feet.

Aerodynamic Exterior

About 3 inches longer than the E-Class, the EQE electric sedan follows a design language similar to the EQS flagship model. It’s still unmistakably a Mercedes-Benz — thanks to the usual understated elegance — but also has a more aerodynamic, more futuristic look than an E-Class. There’s no storage area under the hood, like a lot of electric vehicles. In fact, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t actually want its clients rummaging around under there. To top up the windshield washer fluid, there’s a pop-out nozzle on the driver’s-side front fender.

Our Favorite Features and Tech

Burmester audio
This high-quality surround-sound system is standard in every new EQE sedan. It’s one of our favorite systems and includes the immersive Dolby Atmos technology.

Biometric authentication
Owners can store up to seven separate user profiles, each activated by a fingerprint reader. It’s gimmicky, sure, but we also think it’s cool and science-fiction-esque.

Panoramic sunroof
A panoramic sunroof is standard on the 2024 Mercedes EQE Sedan. This contributes to the spacious cabin’s airy ambiance.

Hyperscreen
The high-resolution Hyperscreen dash (optional in the lower trims, standard higher up) features three screens under one 56-inch curved glass surface: a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a massive 17.7-inch central OLED touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch display for the front passenger.

Augmented reality
We think this optional feature is particularly cool. Street names and direction arrows are superimposed on the navigation display over real-time video of the road. It adds confidence and convenience when trying to reach a destination.

Driver Assistance package
We find this options bundle easy to recommend. It adds an array of driver assistance and safety tech features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance, and evasive steering assistance. It can also bring the EQE to a safe stop if the driver becomes incapacitated.

Range and Charging

The 2024 EQE Sedan lineup offers up to 298 miles of driving range, with the popular EQE 350 4Matic rated for 280 miles. The high-power AMG EQE  brings up the rear at 230 miles. The EQE has a slightly larger battery than the BMW i5 and Genesis Electrified G80, but they’re all similarly efficient and deliver comparable driving range.

On a public DC fast charger, the EQE Sedan can charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. That’s similar to the i5 and about 10 minutes slower than the Electrified G80. On a Level 2 home charger, the EQE can charge from 10% to 100% in about 9.5 hours.

4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty

Mercedes-Benz has new-car and powertrain warranties of four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. These terms are typical in the luxury sector. The EQE’s battery is covered for 10 years or 155,000 miles, which is more generous than usual.

Safety Ratings

The Mercedes-EQ EQE Sedan hasn’t been crash-tested by any agencies in the United States, but it did earn a maximum five stars overall from a similar program across the Atlantic: Euro NCAP.
