Pros

  • Powerful 6-cylinder engine
  • Lavish furnishings
  • Spacious cabin

Cons

  • Preponderously big

What's New?

  • New turbo 6-cylinder engine
  • V8 engine discontinued
  • Series II trim discontinued

An even more luxurious extension of the Jeep Wagoneer and Wagoneer L (reviewed separately), the Grand Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer L is Jeep’s shot across the bow of the Land Rover Range Rover. In other words, they successfully go toe to toe with over-the-top luxury full-size-SUV rivals like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Filled with the aroma of Nappa leather and real wood accents, the Grand Wagoneer cabins scream accomplishment and wealth. And because they share the Jeep name, the Grand Wagoneer models are as competent off the pavement as they are comfortable when highway cruising.

We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of luxury full-size SUVs, including the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

What's New for 2024

The Series II trim and V8 engine option have been discontinued. The new base engine for the Grand Wagoneer is a 510-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder.

2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Pricing

2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L pricing starts at $53,300 for the Grand Wagoneer L Sport Utility 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $96,945 when new. The range-topping 2024 Grand Wagoneer L Series III Obsidian Sport Utility 4D starts at $71,900 today, originally priced from $119,190.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

If you are ready to spend what the Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L fetch, your only decision is whether you want the extra cargo and passenger space the Grand Wagoneer L offers. Both configurations provide similar content. As you move up the trim levels, not only do things become even more extravagant, but Jeep tosses in more advanced technology. Despite that, we’d stick with the well-appointed base trim.

Among competitors, Grand Wagoneer prices are in about the middle of the cost spectrum. For example, the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator have starting prices in the low $80K range, while the Range Rover begins near $107,000, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS starts at over $87,000.

Before buying the Grand Wagoneer, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. Within the full-size luxury SUV class, the Grand Wagoneer is among the class leaders in retaining its value. The Grand Wagoneer L doesn’t do quite as well but is perched exactly in the middle of the pack for holding its value.

Power, Ride, and Handling

Jeep has discontinued the formerly available V8 engine. That leaves the Hurricane twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine as the sole source of thrust. It delivers 510 horsepower to the pavement via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This horsepower number puts it among the top tier of full-size luxury SUV rivals. For example, the Range Rover (395 horsepower), the Lincoln Navigator (440 horsepower), and the Cadillac Escalade (420 horsepower) all trail the Grand Wagoneer.

This is a lot of power for sure, but the Grand Wagoneer is also a lot of vehicle. We found this new engine has the gusto to move this big rig with some decent acceleration, whether that’s in the city or on the open road.

No matter where you drive the Grand Wagoneer, you’ll feel like the king of the highway. In our testing, even the long-wheelbase Grand Wagoneer L was able to handle narrower city roads without much drama. But its true identity comes out on the open road. Set this rig on an interstate, turn on the adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist — along with the massaging front seats — and you feel like you can cross the country with ease. And seriously — your back will appreciate the standard massaging front seats. We particularly like the “Rock Climb” program. Ahhhhhhh.

We also applaud the Grand Wagoneer for its civilized ride despite its body-on-frame truck-like underpinnings. As a matter of fact, ride comfort is also most often cited by our readers as their favorite feature, and we agree that it just wafts along. Every grade comes with an air suspension, which helps smooth out the rough spots. This also aids when off-roading – every Grand Wagoneer has 4-wheel drive – because it can raise the Grand Wagoneer’s ground clearance to 10 inches.

The greatest drawback we’ve discovered is Grand Wagoneer’s size, particularly with the longer wheelbase, when parking or trying to thread very narrow roads. It’s simply ungainly when negotiating urban streets and parking.

Fuel Economy

A benefit of the twin-turbo 6-cylinder is the Jeep Grand Wagoneer’s unexpected solid fuel economy numbers. Even as this twin-turbo engine puts the Grand Wagoneer near the top of the segment for engine performance, its fuel economy is well in the center of the pack. Jeep’s city-and-highway-driving mileage estimate is 17 mpg for the Grand Wagoneer and 16 mpg for the Grand Wagoneer L. You can check out more fuel economy numbers at the EPA website.

Wide-Open Spaces

There was already enough passenger space in the un-stretched Grand Wagoneer for 6-footers to sit happily in the third row, even with two more 6-footers in the first and second rows. This rearmost section of the 2024 Grand Wagoneer L also brings two 1.8-liter stowage spaces for things like phones and other paraphernalia.

In the Grand Wagoneer L models, the second row has a pair of captain’s chairs as standard, putting the occupant count at seven. A 3-person center bench is optional. However, we like the captain’s chairs for their added comfort and for easing access to the third-row seat.

Legroom in the first, second, and third rows is identical in the Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L: a respective 40.9, 42.7, and 36.6 inches. These numbers put the Grand Wagoneer models at the center of the segment. When evaluating cargo carrying for day-to-day use, it’s the volume behind the third row that we consider most important. The Grand Wagoneer provides 27.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind its third-row seat, 70.9 cubic feet with that seat folded, and 116.7 cubic feet with both rows of rear seats lowered. For comparison, a GMC Yukon is similarly roomy, coming in at 25.5, 72.6, and 122.9 cubic feet, respectively. Cargo volume expands dramatically in the Grand Wagoneer L. There’s 44.2 cubic feet behind its third row, 88.8 cubic feet behind its second row, and 130.9 with both rows folded. For comparison, a 2023 Cadillac Escalade ESV is similar, offering 41.5, 94.1, and 142.8 cubic feet, respectively.

Classic Exterior Styling

The Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L are handsome, if a bit understated. In fact, they look quite alike, the latter having noticeably longer back doors and much more rear overhang. Further differentiating the Grand Wagoneer models from the standard Wagoneer are a standard two-tone black roof, a distinctive hood, fender flares, and premium LED lighting, plus the 20- or 22-inch aluminum wheels (the standard Wagoneer wears 18-inch alloy wheels).

Our Favorite Features And Tech

User profiles
The Grand Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer L allow up to five personalized user profiles. Preset preferences in seat position, cabin temperature, and audio choices are then presented automatically.

Amazon Alexa compatibility
As well as including wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, this infotainment system has Amazon Alexa compatibility with Amazon Fire TV, allowing occupants to enjoy hundreds of TV shows and movies. The 2024 Grand Wagoneer L also offers up to 11 USB ports.

Rear-seat camera
The Grand Wagoneer front passenger can keep an eye on the rest of the cabin using a personal screen. But there’s also a zoom function for each seat, with memory settings for the most-watched positions. This is available in the upper trim levels.

McIntosh audio systems
Checking out the prices of highly desirable McIntosh home audio components usually results in deep gulps. But the new Grand Wagoneer has systems from this American company as standard. At the entry level is a 19-speaker/950-watt setup. The higher trims have a 23-speaker/1,375-watt configuration. The ears of our resident audiophile attest that this system is among the best out there, especially when playing high-quality, lossless music.

ParkSense Active Park Assist
This is a self-parking system for parallel and perpendicular spaces. With a full complement of passengers and an extra-long body to deal with, this may well be the ideal optional feature.

Center-row captain’s chairs
A 60/40 center bench seat comes standard on the Grand Wagoneer. The Grand Wagoneer L gets center-row captain’s chairs, which drops the seating capacity to seven but ups the luxurious ambiance while giving middle-row passengers some extra personal space.

Engine and Transmission

Ripping a page from the book “Less Is More,” Jeep looks to streamline the engine lineup, fitting all Grand Wagoneer models with its Hurricane twin-turbo 6-cylinder engine married to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Its 510 horsepower can enable a 0-60 mph run in under 5.5 seconds — that’s fast for something seemingly the size of a city block. Furthermore, Grand Wagoneer models can tow up to 10,000 pounds. The Chevy Suburban and Lincoln Navigator can tug a maximum of 8,300 pounds.

3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty

Jeep arms its SUV lineup with the standard bumper-to-bumper limited coverage for a mainstream manufacturer: three years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The limited powertrain coverage is for five years or 60,000 miles.

Safety Ratings

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash- or safety-tested the Grand Wagoneer.
