Pros

  • Good range
  • Fast charging
  • Standout style

Cons

  • Limited cargo flexibility

What's New?

  • Ioniq 6 is an all-new model

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is an ultra-sleek sedan version of the Ioniq 5 SUV that won seemingly all the big awards in its first year of existence, including a pair of Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Awards: Best Electric Car and Best New Model. Not to be outdone, the Ioniq 6 won some of the very same awards this year. The two models’ pricing and range figures are similar, too. There’s one version of the Ioniq 6 rated to run 361 miles on a single charge, but most are rated for 270 or 305 miles. At a public DC fast-charger, the battery is capable of charging from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, which is exceptional.

Inside, the Ioniq 6 has an air that complements the design-centric exterior. Backseat and cargo roominess are compromised compared to the Ioniq 5 SUV, of course, but as evidenced by the ubiquity of the Tesla Model 3 around Kelley Blue Book’s Southern California headquarters, not every EV buyer needs or even wants an SUV. And those buyers now have one more solid option to consider in the Ioniq 6.

What’s New for 2023

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 is an all-new model. It joins the Tesla Model 3 as one of the few electric vehicles in its price range for shoppers who might prefer a sedan to an SUV.

2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 Pricing

2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 pricing starts at $25,188 for the IONIQ 6 SE Standard Range Sedan 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $42,935 when new. The range-topping 2023 IONIQ 6 Limited Sedan 4D starts at $27,419 today, originally priced from $53,935.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

Power, Ride and Handling

Most single-motor, rear-wheel-drive versions of the Ioniq 6 will scoot to 60 mph in about seven seconds, which is plenty quick. Dual-motor models provide the added traction of all-wheel drive and drop the 0-60 time closer to five seconds, which is downright fun. Like many EVs, the experience of moving away from a stop so quickly is heightened by the smooth and quiet manner in which it happens.

The passenger cabin also remains hushed on the highway. As in many EVs, the ride can get a bit choppy over uneven sections, a consequence of the heavy batteries. While the lower center of gravity and dedicated suspension tuning suggest the Ioniq 6 might be more responsive and engaging than the Ioniq 5, we’ve found them about equally enjoyable. Both offer one-pedal driving, which is becoming a favorite feature among our reviewers. Driving around town using just the accelerator starts as a novelty. Then it’s a game. Then it’s simply a better way of operating a vehicle.

We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating the rapidly growing number of electric vehicles, including the Ioniq 6.

Modern Interior

Interior of the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6

What’s up with those “winglets” on either side of the dash, you may ask? In some markets, the Ioniq 6 has small exterior cameras instead of rearview mirrors – more aerodynamic – and the image is displayed on monitors located in those winglets. Here, they’re just a unique design element. The window switches are located in the center console, and we like the resulting sleek door panels and long, user-friendly door pulls. The low profile and a roof that slopes quickly down to the rear bumper impact backseat accommodations and cargo volume relative to the Ioniq 5 SUV or even a traditionally shaped sedan, of course. But for drivers who don’t regularly host multiple adults or ferry big/bulky loads of cargo, the Ioniq 6 can be plenty roomy.

Sleek, Slippery Exterior

Rear view of the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6

As its shape would suggest, the Ioniq 6 is among the most aerodynamic vehicle on the road. A drag co-efficient of 0.22 puts it in the same league as wind-cheating standouts like the Mercedes-EQ EQS, Lucid Air, and Tesla Model S. This is achieved not just by the sleek and streamlined shape, but also by underbody paneling, active air flaps at the front, and aerodynamically designed wheels. As well as optimizing energy use, an aerodynamic body helps keep wind noise to a minimum. And the more time we spend with it, the cooler it looks.

Favorite Features

Reverse charging
With vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, the Ioniq 6 can be used to power a blender while camping or a fridge full of perishables in a power outage. Exclusive to the Limited trim.

Use your phone as your key
Hyundai’s handy phone-as-key capability finally works with iPhone and Apple Watch. With Digital Key 2, you can unlock and start the Ioniq 6 with only your phone present, you can share that capability with three other users, and you can even “send” someone a temporary key.

Semi-autonomous driving
Take your feet off the pedals, keep a hand on the wheel, and the Ioniq 6 can pretty much drive itself down the highway. There are plenty of limitations, of course, but we’ve logged many hundreds of miles in this manner, and Hyundai’s system is among the best.

Hands-free smart trunk
With your hands full and the key in your pocket, just stand at the trunk for three seconds and it’ll open automatically. No need to wave a foot under the bumper.

Driverless parking
Useful for some but merely a fun party trick for most, you can pull the Ioniq 6 into an extremely tight parking space, for instance, while standing outside the vehicle and controlling it via the key fob.

Continuous improvement
The Ioniq 6 is the first Hyundai to offer over-the-air software updates. Like a smartphone, it’s capable of getting better with seamless and ongoing fixes and improvements.

Range and Charging

The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 boasts good range figures and outstanding charging times. While the lineup includes a version good for 361 miles and another rated for 240 miles, the vast majority of units are rated for 305 miles or, when outfitted with two motors, more power, and all-wheel drive, 270 miles. These are solid figures, but where the Ioniq 6 really separates itself from so many others in its price range is with fast charging speeds. With its cutting-edge 800-volt architecture, the Ioniq 6 can charge from 10% to 80% capacity — adding up to 200 miles of range — in as little as 18 minutes at a public DC fast charger. That’s exceptional. At home, the Ioniq 6 can absorb a full charge in just over seven hours.

More Ioniq 6 range and efficiency information is available on the EPA’s website.

Exceptional Warranty

Hyundai offers some of the best warranties in the industry. The 2023 Ioniq 6 is covered by a 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, plus 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain and battery protection. It also comes with three years or 36,000 miles of no-charge scheduled maintenance, and five years of roadside assistance with no mileage limit.
