The 2026 GMC Sierra HD is known for its combination of superior towing and payload capacity, off-road chops, and upscale amenities. Pricing starts at $52,995.
These days, the family truck serves as everything from the hard-nosed work truck to the errand-runner to the prized chariot for a night on the town. The GMC Sierra HD is well-suited for any environment. Its styling is muscular and chiseled, and this truck has the impressive specs to back up those tough looks, offering up to 36,000 pounds of towing capacity. It’s spacious and comfortable, and can be outfitted to be as down-to-earth or as flashy as you want, whatever your budget allows. There are trim levels optimized for work, off-roading, or well-heeled luxury. You just have to decide which is best for your needs.
We’ve spent hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of full-size heavy-duty trucks, including the GMC Sierra HD.
GMC’s innovative MultiPro tailgate is now available on the SLT trim (part of a $1,580 package). New colors Glacier White Tricoat and Coastal Dune replace White Frost Tricoat and Thunderstorm Gray. The Amazon Alexa service has been removed.
The 2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab has a starting sticker price of $52,995, with the range-topping Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab Denali Ultimate kicking off at $96,395. But Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Pricing currently suggests paying $3,195 to $5,395 less than MSRP, depending on trim and equipment. These prices are updated weekly.

Of the four rivals in this segment – including the Ford Super Duty, the Ram HD variants, and the Sierra’s corporate cousin, the Chevy Silverado HD – the Sierra HD has the highest starting price, but prices for all of them start within a $4,000 range.
The 4-wheel-drive (4WD) Sierra 2500 HD Denali with the Duramax diesel engine is a very popular option, but know that the diesel option is an expensive one. The standard gas engine is also very good. If you want to spend a bit less, consider the Chevy Silverado HD. If you want to spend a lot less and don’t require the towing and payload capabilities of the Sierra HD, you will save yourself some money and stress during inner-city parking by picking the 1/2-ton Sierra 1500 instead.
Before buying a Sierra HD, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay. The Sierra 2500 and 3500 have the best five-year resale value in the full-size HD truck segment. Recouping more money when selling a vehicle can mean a bigger down payment and lower monthly payments on the next one.
The 2026 GMC Sierra HD lineup includes a choice of two V8 engines: strong and stronger. The Sierra HD’s base gas engine, which is sufficient for most HD pickup drivers, is a robust engine optimized for towing and hauling. This mill is similar in horsepower to the base engine in the Ford Super Duty or the Ram HD and has the most torque of the three. If you don’t have the budget or the need for the diesel, the gas V8 is plenty.
The available Duramax turbodiesel V8 significantly boosts the torque rating and maximum towing capability (36,000 pounds) of the Sierra HD. Ford’s answer to the Duramax is a 500-hp 6.7-liter turbocharged High Output (HO) Power Stroke V8 that generates 1,200 lb-ft of torque. It can tow up to 38,000 pounds in the F-350, while the Ram 3500 can tug up to 36,720 pounds with the 1,075 lb-ft of torque generated by its available 6.7-liter HO turbodiesel.
| Powertrain | Horsepower | Torque | Transmission |
| 6.6-liter gas V8 | 401 hp @ 5,200 rpm | 464 lb-ft @ 4,000 rpm | 10-speed automatic |
| 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 | 470 hp @ 2,800 rpm | 975 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm | 10-speed automatic |
When it comes right down to it, driving the GMC Sierra HD drives just like an overgrown full-size truck – because that’s what it is. We found it comfortable and composed for its considerable size. Rough roads are no problem for the Sierra HD, and it floats along rather nicely on the highway. Best in class ride quality goes to one of the Sierra HD’s competitors, the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty, but the Sierra is quite comfortable for this segment.
Since GMC engineered this truck expressly for heavy towing and hauling, it tugs without skipping a beat as long as your load is within its capabilities. We found it pulls especially well when propelled by the available Duramax turbodiesel V8, which makes nearly 1,000 lb-ft of torque. The standard gas V8 gets the job done but strains a bit in the heaviest towing situations.
As for off-road capabilities, the rugged AT4 and AT4X models are the most adventurous variants in the Sierra HD lineup. Separating the AT4 and AT4X goes beyond the $14,000 price difference. The AT4 has Rancho shocks and all-terrain tires, while the AT4X boasts 35-inch tires, stronger skid plates, and more robust suspension components, including Multimatic DSSV shocks.
| Model | Max Towing | Max Payload |
| Sierra 2500 | 22,500 pounds | 3,759 pounds |
| Sierra 3500 | 36,000 pounds | 7,290 pounds |
The government doesn’t keep track of or publish fuel-economy estimates for this pickup classification.
The GMC Sierra HD is more premium than the average heavy-duty truck, with an upscale yet practical interior design. In addition, the front seats are roomy, as are the Crew Cab’s rear seats, which also benefit from under-seat storage space. We found the legroom adequate when we climbed into the back of the Double Cab. For context, rear-seat legroom in the Sierra HD Crew Cab is about the same as in the Ford Super Duty Crew Cab and roughly three inches more than in the Ram HD.
Beyond the space inside, the amenities get more impressive as you move through the model range. For example, the SLT and higher trims come with perforated leather seats, the AT4 trim has Jet Black and Kalahari interior accents, and the Denali model is full of luxurious materials like Denali-exclusive leather and open-pore wood trim.
The top Denali Ultimate grade is one of the most luxurious trucks in this class. It boasts premium features like massaging front seats, a microsuede headliner, and a Bose 12-speaker audio system. It rivals the Ford Super Duty Platinum and Ram HD Limited.
Off-Road-Ready AT4 Models
The AT4 and AT4X models are capable off-roaders. On top of a rugged appearance package inside and out, they come with skid plates, an off-road inclinometer, all-terrain tires, and upgraded suspension systems. We’ve spent time in the AT4 and the even more capable AT4X. Both are highly competent when the pavement expires. The 2500’s available AEV Edition adds extensive protective gear for your off-road excursions, all while keeping the factory warranty.
ProGrade Trailering System
The ProGrade Trailering System includes Hitch Guidance with Hitch View, GCW (Gross Combined Weight) Alert, Bed View, and more, making towing and hauling safer and easier. It also has an in-vehicle trailering app. We think this is some of the best towing tech in the industry.
MultiPro Tailgate
The MultiPro tailgate is standard on all but the base Pro trim of the Sierra HD. It has six different positions, including load stops, cab steps, a desk, and more. We were skeptical before we actually sampled this versatile accessory. Now, it would be high on our list of reasons to buy a Sierra HD. It’s also available with its own built-in Kicker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity.
