The F-150 gives buyers the gift of choice and a consistent blend of form, power, and well-placed features. Last year’s introduction of an all-new generation of F-150 brought updated styling inside and out, a new hybrid powertrain, and the vehicle’s onboard power generation option, plus the introduction of the Ford F-150 Tremor, the work truck with an off-road capable edge. For 2022, the diesel option was dropped, but a new appearance package and a new bed utility package became available. Available in a fantastic array of sophisticated combinations, the Ford F-150 aims to meet the buyer where they are and with the tools to do anything, whether work or play.
In a small but competitive class with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and Ram 1500, the Ford F-150 remains king of the mountain by offering a trim or option for every buyer and a legacy of strength, American pride, and a hard-working, can-do ethos. Choice reigns high as there are eight trims: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Limited, Tremor, and Raptor. The three beds target a variety of truck usages. You can choose from 5.5-, 6.5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, depending on cab and trim. The three cab sizes: regular cab, plus the extended cab and crew cab, dubbed Super Cab and SuperCrew, offer flexibility of use, and the 11 grille styles and 13 wheel designs bring a spark of delight to the exterior. Ford doesn’t build all possible combinations of trim level, cab size, and bed length, concentrating on popular configurations. So, you won’t find a Platinum SuperCrew with an 8-foot bed or an XL Regular Cab with a 5.5-foot bed — they didn’t build those oddball combinations.
The F-150 has an option to satisfy the power-hungry and the everyday driver. The base trim uses a 3.3-liter V6, a standard 10-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive (RWD), and a regular cab. Other engine options include a 5.0-liter V8, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, and a 3.5-liter PowerBoost V6 Hybrid. The F-150 continues to offer something for everyone and make a Ford truck accessible for most truck buyers. The various engines and powertrains tap into Ford’s superpower of delivering stellar truck tech and beautifully balanced vehicles with a smooth ride, balancing power and grit.
Our team tested the new PowerBoost hybrid platform and remains a solid winner. It uses a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 plus a 35-kW electric motor powered by a 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery to eke out a stellar 700 miles of gasoline-electric range and a towing capacity of 12,000 pounds. The easy, confidence-inducing drive makes towing a breeze with seamless shifts and impressive agility.
Excellent road manners complement a user-friendly, quiet cabin. The center stack houses all the navigation, sound, and climate controls, and an optional folding Interior Work Surface. Most functions are accessible through an 8-inch or 12-inch touchscreen equipped with Sync4. A digital cluster hovers behind the wheel and shows animated terrains as prompted by your drive mode. A comprehensive safety suite called Ford Co-Pilot360 comes standard and includes forward collision warning and dynamic brake support. Hill-start assist, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking (with pedestrian detection), auto hold, and a dynamic rear camera with hitch support are also included.
The 2022 F-150’s exterior redesign is burly and sleek simultaneously, and is a good framework for the various grille and headlight designs. The power hands-free, extended-length running boards and Tailgate Work Surface are nice touches that add value and increase functionality. Though last year marked a new generation, the F-150 feels the same and speaks to continuing a long legacy.
Another cool feature in the 2022 model of the F-150 is the Pro Power OnBoard inverter. It allows the F-150 to serve as a generator and is available on vehicles with 2.7-liter EcoBoost, 3.5-liter EcoBoost, and 5.0-liter V8 engines. This new feature can power a plasma cutter and work light simultaneously for up to 32 hours.
