Introduction

The Mazda CX-5 is part of the most popular and crowded class of vehicles: compact SUVs. There are more than a dozen rivals in this segment, including bestsellers such as the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, yet the Mazda CX-5 has long been a standout. Thank Mazda’s upscale exterior design, premium cabin, and athletic nature. Indeed, we’ve long thought the Mazda CX-5 is one of the, if not the, most fun-to-drive vehicles in its class. Perhaps that’s not a surprise given that Mazda is the creator of the MX-5 Miata roadster, and we love that the brand’s zesty nature extends to its practical SUVs. This second generation of the CX-5 debuted for the 2017 model year and received a major update for the 2022 model year, when every CX-5 model gained all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard, suspension and transmission improvements, and styling tweaks. For 2023, Mazda saw little need for updates. A new Rhodium White paint was the only change.

KBB Review Highlights

In our tests, we found the Mazda CX-5 to look and feel a cut above the rest, with premium design, features, and manners. The updates for the 2022 model year made the CX-5 quieter and more comfortable, yet it still retained the agile manners its drivers love. The move to make AWD standard was also a boon, giving the CX-5 enhanced traction in both wet and dry road conditions. With no appreciable changes, the 2023 models have the same appeal.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5’s standard 4-cylinder engine makes 187 horsepower, which is enough to make it feel lively. We also appreciate that it uses a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission versus the continuously variable type used by others for efficiency’s sake, which can drone. Drivers seeking more thrills can look to the optional turbo engine, which really juices the CX-5 with 227 hp, or up to 256 when using 93-octane fuel. This engine makes the CX-5 feel especially swift and confident in passing maneuvers. We love that no matter which trim you choose, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 comes standard with a full suite of active safety and driver assist features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. On the tech front, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 comes standard with an impressive 10.25-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
