KBB Review Highlights

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 upgrades the game in the compact crossover segment by distinguishing itself as the stylish and fun-to-drive leader. In a strong class with the Honda CR-V, Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, and Subaru Forester, the 2021 CX-5 stands out due to its elevated design, gorgeous facades, and superior performance.

The CX-5 is an eye-catcher… with an edge. Smooth lines, reflective surfaces, and breathtaking paint colors like the legendary Soul Red Crystal draw you in and remind you of just how beautiful a car can be. More than just a pretty paint job, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 can do the work. It delivers a responsive and agile drive due to an advanced torque-vectoring system that improves handling and anchors performance. Having made a name with the Miata’s exhilarating drive, Mazda knows how to efficiently equip a vehicle with enough power to do the daily grind and keep the experience fun. The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is no exception.

The CX-5 Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring models use a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower (hp) and 186 lb ft. of torque. The Grand Touring and Signature models have an upgraded turbocharged version that ups the power output to 250 hp. Mazda discontinued the diesel option for 2021, and the CX-5 Carbon Edition has arrived. Packaged with Polymetal Gray paint, black wheels, honeycomb trim, and lipstick red leather, the Carbon Edition is ready to paint the town red. It comes standard with a naturally aspirated (non-turbocharged) 2.5-liter and is available with a more powerful turbocharged option.

The interior of the CX-5 is a quiet luxury enthusiast’s cocoon. Clean lines, open space, driver-centric functions, and elevated finishes are displayed throughout the vehicle. An elegant example of Mazda’s Kodo design language, the 2021 CX-5 actively connects the driver to the car through texture and function. From neat contrast stitching, easy-to-reach buttons, a (new for 2021) 10.25-inch digital information touchscreen that rests above the center console, wide-opening rear doors, and supple seating, the CX-5 feels special, thoughtfully designed, and supportive. Though rear air-conditioning vents are a helpful addition, the rear leg space of the CX-5 is petite, falling behind the CR-V and Escape.

The 2021 CX-5 starts with a strong base. The least expensive trim, Sport, comes with the new larger center display, smartphone projection, two USD ports, LED lights, cloth-covered seating, push-button start, an electric parking brake, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. As you move through the lines toward the range-topping Signature, more features and functions arise, including Nappa leather upholstery, wood accents, rear USB ports, a 10-speaker Bose audio system, head-up display, a power liftgate, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

As of 2021, in the CX-5, Advanced Smart City Brake Support and G-Vectoring Control Plus are standard. Advanced Smart City Brake Support pairs pedestrian detection with a driver alert system that will apply the brakes at speeds less than 50mph should it detect an imminent impact. The G-Vectoring Control Plus system subtly reduces torque and gently applies the brake to support handling, enhance control, and improve overall performance. The driver assistance package offers an extra layer of protection and confidence to an already well-outfitted vehicle.
