The Buick Encore GX is a subcompact SUV situated in a nebulous area. The 2023 Encore GX offers a luxury feel and forward-looking safety technology to the subcompact SUV segment. As is typical for a Buick, it straddles the line between mainstream and luxury, as its interior quality and price tag demonstrate.
The Buick Encore GX made its debut for the 2020 model year, alongside the entry-level Encore. The difference is the Encore GX is underpinned by a different platform shared by the new-for-2021 Chevy Trailblazer. The Encore GX is slightly bigger, roomier, and more modern than the regular Encore. Available in three models and a choice of two 3-cylinder engines, the 2023 Encore GX holds its own in a competitive class.
The 2023 Buick Encore GX is a nicely equipped package with abundant driver assistance and convenience features. Rather than leaning into the off-road side of the sport-utility space, the Encore GX is really more at home on paved roads and city living.

The 2023 Encore GX is a small but reasonably roomy SUV. With a modern safety suite that includes automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist, the Encore GX offers a confidence-inducing option for drivers who want luxury amenities at a value-conscious price. Key rivals include the Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30.
Buick Encore GX models get one of two turbo engines with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The turbocharged 1.3-liter model has a 9-speed automatic transmission, delivers 155 horsepower, and is available with FWD or AWD. Meanwhile, the 137-hp 1.2-liter model is FWD only and features a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Both options provide a comfortable, if moderately powered, ride. However, we prefer the extra pep of the 1.3-liter engine. In the CPO market, there isn’t a huge price difference between the two engines, so it’s easy to recommend the larger one that unlocks AWD availability. When equipped with FWD, the combined fuel economy rating (30 mpg) is the same for both engines.
With a roomier interior than the original Encore, the Encore GX provides comfortable space for four — five in a pinch — and enough leg room for adults to relax in the back row. Soft-touch materials add comfort to the front of the cabin. In the rear, the Encore GX’s interior is less high end due to an abundance of plastic and firm surfaces. The rear seat folds flat and splits 60/40 for improved cargo flexibility, creating nearly as much space behind the rear seat as the larger Envision.
The Encore GX is available in three levels: the entry-level Preferred, midlevel Select, and top-tier Essence. Starting with a strong base, the Preferred trim is well equipped with the 1.2-liter engine, 18-inch wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, push-button start, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot. As you rise through the trims, heated front seats, dual climate control, leather upholstery, an in-vehicle air ionizer, and enhancements to the safety package appear. The Essence trim tops the lineup with a leather interior and LED lighting.
Various factory options are available for the 2023 Encore GX. These include the Sport Touring Package, which offers cosmetic enhancements such as a black mesh grille, red exterior accents, and etched alloy wheels, and the Advanced Technology Package, which adds navigation, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, and a parking assist package to the Encore GX Select.
This affordable SUV features a comprehensive safety and convenience suite and plenty of driver assistance features. A comfortable cabin and easy drive make it a winning choice in the subcompact SUV segment.
