Tapping into Italy’s pride, history of excellence in design, and vibrant spirit, the Stelvio provides a solid entry point into the luxury crossover space. Reviving the “Sprint” trim for the base model, the 2021 Stelvio delivers an intelligent package with flair and sass. Sensuously designed and equipped for robust handling, the Stelvio builds on the wins of the Giulia sedan and adds a heavier body, a cohesive driver assistance suite, and a high-performance trim in the Quadrifoglio.

KBB Review Highlights

Designed in Cassino, Italy, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio has presence, style and grace. Curving body lines, evocative textures, and a spirited drive experience elevate the 2021 Stelvio in a class of strong contenders known for their heritage and pedigree. While not as refined as the Volvo XC60 or as staid as the BMW X3, the 2021 Stelvio is exhilarating and has enough gravitas to turn heads.

Aimed at pleasure and performance, all models except the performance-oriented Quadrifoglio use the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and a lightweight carbon driveshaft to power an agile vehicle with 280 horsepower. The 8-speed-automatic Stelvio is a rare fun-to-drive crossover due to the combination of power and the Alfa DNA drive modes. The top-tier Quadrifoglio sources a twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 from Ferrari and adds all-wheel drive (AWD) and “Race” mode to deliver 505 horsepower and 443-lb ft of torque to an actual performance machine. The sport-tuned crossover rivals the Porsche Macan Turbo and the BMW X3 M for speed and handling. AWD comes standard on all trims except the base Sprint, which uses standard rear-wheel drive (RWD) or optional AWD.

The 5-seater’s interior is calm and refined. While it is not quite as enticing as the exterior, it is thoughtfully designed and elevated. Sport-inspired leather seating is standard across all trim lines, and the lack of a simulated blend in the lower trims is a refreshing nod to the brand’s legacy of elevated design. The Alfa Romeo signature twin-cowl instrument cluster and an 8.8-inch touchscreen distinguish the dash. Smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and five subtly placed charging ports are present. Less like an iPad on wheels, the Stelvio tips its hat to its racing heritage and the pleasures of driving.

With a streamlined trim lineup for 2021, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio solidly aligns form and function. Not overly tech-heavy, the base Stelvio Sprint is well-outfitted with rear-wheel drive, Brembo brakes, rain-sensing wipers, 10-way power-adjustable seats, and a powered tailgate. It also has heated front seats, a dual-pane sunroof, and a 10-speaker setup. Progress to higher trims like the Ti, Ti Sport, and Quadrifolglio and add wireless charging, heated rear seating, and a 115-volt outlet. The crystal-clear Harman Kardon audio system is optional on the lower trims and standard in the top-tier Quadrifolgio. In the highest trim, a carbon fiber steering wheel is standard.

Several appearance and performance packages are available for the 2021 Stelvio. Designed to feel more bespoke than mainstream, supple Alcantara (synthetic suede), larger alloy wheels, hands-free tailgate operation, and tires made for high-performance driving are some options buyers can choose to customize their Stelvio from. The 2021 model also brings four new paint colors inspired by Alfa Romeo heritage, including a bronzy Ocra that looks like it originated in a vintage Italian film. With a bright blend of flair, form, elevated design, and smooth power, the 2021 Alfa Romeo Stelvio makes a compelling choice in the luxury crossover segment.
