The 2024 Range Rover Velar is a midsize 5-passenger SUV that slots between the smaller Range Rover Evoque and the larger Range Rover Sport. Highly competent off-road, the Velar also impresses with its over-the-pavement comfort. In other words, neither luxurious on-road manners nor off-road prowess was an afterthought. The beautifully detailed cabin is brimming with a wide range of up-to-date technology and convenience features.
Range Rover streamlined and renamed the trim levels for 2024, offloading an engine option in the process. The lower trims derive power from a 247-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, while the two top grades use a 394-horsepower turbocharged 6-cylinder for propulsion. Engine output travels to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Estimated fuel economy in mixed city-and-highway driving is 23 mpg with the 4-cylinder and 21 mpg with the 6-cylinder.
What’s New for 2024
In addition to shuffling and renaming trim levels, Range Rover gave the Velar a mild facelift with a restyled grille and lighting elements. The big news inside is the curved 11.4-inch infotainment touchscreen display perched atop the center stack. Range Rover also now offers wool-blend seating for those wishing to avoid leather.
Passenger Room and Comfort
New owners of the Range Rover Velar should prepare to be pampered. Over the decades, Range Rover has excelled in delivering upscale, posh passenger quarters. Indeed, the Velar is a midsize SUV; however, its interior dimensions are impressive for its class. Passengers basking in the Velar’s wide-open spaces enjoy more than 40 inches of front legroom and over 39 inches of headroom. In the second-row seat, passengers have 37.1 inches of legroom. This betters the BMW X6 and Volvo XC90.
Features and Technology
We continue to be dazzled with the extent of standard features in even the entry-level Velar P250 S. Perforated leather seating, 14-way power-adjustable front seats, a power-adjustable heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a power rear liftgate, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, and a power panoramic roof are all standard. By the time you arrive at the range-topping P400 Dynamic HSE grade, the features list includes 20-way power-adjustable massaging front seats and upgraded Windsor leather seating.
An 11-speaker Meridian audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition, satellite-radio capability, and wireless phone charging are also standard. Range Rover sprinkled four USB-C and one USB-A ports around the cabin. There is also a 12-volt power port in the center console.
Materials and Design
If your idea of more is less, you will appreciate the simplicity of the Range Rover Velar’s uncluttered instrument panel. It’s clean and wonderfully stylish, with smooth lines, soft-touch surfaces, and round corners. When you spend over $60,000 on a midsize SUV, you want it to be elegant. The Velar won’t disappoint. Leather is standard in every Velar model; however, in the upper trims, Range Rover upgrades the leather quality. If you prefer sustainable seat coverings, you can opt for a wool-blend material.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
With the rear seat folded, the Range Rover Velar delivers 70 cubic feet of cargo space. This isn’t the most in the midsize luxury segment; however, it is above average. Likewise, when measuring the space behind the second row, the Velar provides more cargo-carrying capacity than most of its rivals. A power rear liftgate facilitates loading and unloading your freight.
