When shopping for full-size SUVs, two brand names immediately come to mind: Chevrolet and Ford. There’s good reason for this, as the two companies have been the leaders at cranking out large SUVs for decades. The 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2026 Ford Expedition give potential buyers two excellent options. They’re large, powerful 3-row SUVs with the creature comforts, capability, and safety technology that full-size SUV buyers desire.
With those attributes being just the start of a buyer’s wish list, let’s check out these two big machines to see how they compare.
2026 Chevrolet Tahoe
Chevrolet continues to produce some of the best full-size SUVs on the market, and the current version of the Tahoe only adds to the legacy. It received extensive updates for the 2025 model year, including a new look inside and out, a higher output from its diesel engine option, a new 17.7-inch infotainment screen, and wider availability of the Super Cruise hands-free driving system. Those updates carry forward to the 2026 model year with the addition of a new in-car camera for monitoring passengers in the back, the Key Card system that lets you use a card as a key, and a new RST Dark Essentials appearance package.
Moving inside, potential buyers will see a cavernous space with three rows of seats, plenty of storage, and a slew of new technology that keeps passengers entertained and safe.
The Chevy Tahoe has three engine options: two V8s and the aforementioned turbodiesel. All of the above offer plenty of power and a smooth ride. Perhaps just as importantly, as large as the Tahoe is, it’s a capable off-roader as well as a practical family vehicle.
Chevrolet Tahoe Highlights
Engine options: As we touched on above, the Chevy Tahoe has a lot of variety under the hood. Choose from the standard V8, a more powerful V8, or a turbodiesel that’s both torquey and fuel-efficient. By contrast, the Ford Expedition is only available with a turbo V6.
Off-road chops: Chevy offers a Z71 off-road trim for the Tahoe. The Z71 model provides standard 4-wheel drive (4WD), underbody protection, recovery hooks, and more — just what you need to get out into the wild.
Super Cruise: GM’s hands-free highway driving system, dubbed Super Cruise, is now available on all but the base trim of the Tahoe. Previously, you could only get it on the expensive upper trims. Super Cruise allows for hands-free driving, under certain conditions, on about 700,000 miles of roads across North America.

2026 Ford Expedition
The Ford Expedition was fully redesigned last year, making it the fresher of these rivals and repeating its segment win in our Best Buy Awards. It carries over largely unchanged for 2026, apart from a new optional rear-seat entertainment system. The new generation of the Expedition boasts a high-tech infotainment system, a clever split liftgate, and a rugged, capable Tremor model. The Tahoe may be the sales leader in this class, but the updated Expedition puts its longtime Chevy rival on notice.
A twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 powers every version of the 2026 Expedition, and it’s available in two different tunings. In the Active and King Ranch trims, it makes 400 horsepower. Its high-output 440-hp tuning is standard on the Tremor trim and optional on the Platinum model.
Ford Expedition Highlights
Ford Split Gate: The Ford Split Gate makes the Expedition the only full-size SUV in its class with a split tailgate, preventing items from rolling out of the cargo area when you open the hatch. We love the convenience and versatility it brings to this family SUV.
BlueCruise: Although Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system doesn’t cover as many miles as GM’s Super Cruise, we think the Ford system works just as well. It’s standard on the King Ranch model, and we love that it’s optional on every other trim of the Expedition.
Tremor variant: The Expedition Tremor gets off-road DNA from the Tremor variants of capable Ford pickup trucks. A few of its perks include 33-inch all-terrain tires, a rugged appearance package with skid plates, an electronic locking rear differential, and, of course, standard 4-wheel drive (4WD).

Conclusion
These are two full-size SUVs that serve their duties extraordinarily well. They’re designed to be do-it-all family hauling rigs, and that’s exactly what they excel at. The 2026 Ford Expedition comes with many great perks, including the capable Tremor model, a split liftgate, and BlueCruise available on every trim. However, we also like the mechanical variety of the Chevy Tahoe, and its Z71 model can play in the mud just as well as the Expedition Tremor. These SUVs are so good and so similar in their strengths that it’s worth test-driving both and going with the one that speaks to you.
