The Chevrolet Bolt EV has been a success for Chevrolet. Chevy has sold more than 100,000 of these compact 5-door electric hatchbacks since 2017, and the redesigned new 2022 Chevy Bolt shown here is part of GM’s ambitious plan to launch 30 new EVs globally by 2025.
While the Bolt’s chassis and powertrain are unchanged from 2021, the styling and tech-focused interior have been dramatically improved. Safety and connectivity are better are as well, along with the quality and styling of the interior.
Perhaps most significant to buyers, the Bolt has been reduced in price. Citing improved economies of scale, Chevrolet has dropped the Bolt’s price from $36,500 (2021 model) to $31,500. That’s a saving of $5,000 for a vehicle that’s been improved significantly in multiple ways.
With the same electric motor and 65-kWh lithium-ion battery pack as before, the 2022 Bolt EV continues to have a respectable range of 259 miles. Look for this new Bolt to go sale this summer alongside a new Bolt EUV (electric utility vehicle), which is based on the same chassis but is six inches longer and has three extra inches of rear legroom. The Bolt EUV (reviewed separately) looks similar to the standard Bolt EV but shares no body panels with it.
Competitors for the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV include the Hyundai Kona EV, Kia Niro EV, and the Nissan Leaf.
2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV pricing starts at $16,760 for the Bolt EV 1LT Hatchback 4D, which had a starting MSRP of $32,495 when new. The range-topping 2022 Bolt EV 2LT Hatchback 4D starts at $19,383 today, originally priced from $35,545.

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors. The prices here reflect what buyers are currently paying for used 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV models in typical condition when purchasing from a dealership. These prices are updated weekly.

KBB hasn’t driven the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV yet, but it has the same powertrain and suspension as the 2021 Bolt, which we praised for being an excellent city runabout that was quick and quiet. We see no reason for that to change with the 2022 model.
Because it’s the same size as before, the 2022 Bolt EV will be roomy in front for tall passengers and a bit lacking in rear legroom. On a positive note, the whole interior has been redesigned, and the quality of the materials has been improved.
In addition to a flat-bottomed steering wheel with a “Regen on Demand” paddle, the 2022 Bolt EV features a new electronic gear shifter with toggles and buttons. It also has a reconfigurable 8.0-inch color gauge cluster and a 10.2-inch color touchscreen with integrated climate controls.
Design updates on the new 2022 Chevy Bolt EV focus primarily on the front of the vehicle, where there’s a more upright front fascia with a new hood and high-mounted slit-style LED headlights that double as sequential turn indicators. We think this new Bolt looks more like an EV than before, no doubt intentionally so. In back, the LED taillights have a revised lighting signature.
DUAL-LEVEL CHARGE CORD
This new charging cord, available on the Bolt EV, allows the vehicle to be plugged into a standard 3-prong 120-volt outlet for Level 1 charging or a 240-volt Level 2 outlet for charging at up to 7.2 kilowatts.
CHEVY SAFETY ASSIST
This standard safety suite includes a forward-collision alert, automatic emergency braking, a lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a following-distance indicator.
All 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV models get the same 65-kWh lithium-ion battery pack and the same 200-horsepower permanent magnet electric motor used in last year’s model. This means that all have the same 259-mile range as before. And with every Bolt EV purchased, Chevrolet will cover the cost of having a Level 2 charging station installed at that person’s home. This is done in collaboration with a company called Qmerit, and it allows Bolt EV owners to do the vast majority of their vehicle charging at home.
Other standard Bolt EV hardware includes LED headlights and taillights, cruise control, a 10.2-inch touchscreen, and a configurable 8.0-inch color gauge cluster. All new Bolt EVs also have a one-pedal driving button that keeps the vehicle in this efficiency-enhancing mode even between the on and off cycles.
Options on the 2022 Bolt EV include the dual-level charging cord, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a 4G WiFi hotspot. Available safety and driver-assistance features include rear cross-traffic alert and a surround-view camera, plus adaptive cruise control.
You can also get new In-Vehicle Apps that allow the Bolt EV owner to use popular apps like Alexa, Spotify, and The Weather Channel.
The 2022 Chevy Bolt has a 150-kilowatt permanent magnet electric motor powered by a liquid-cooled 65-kWh lithium-ion battery weighing a substantial 947 pounds.
In more familiar terms, the Bolt EV’s electric powertrain has 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, the latter available the moment the accelerator is pressed.
Using a 240-volt Level 2 charger at home, the Bolt EV can be recharged fully in about 7 hours. With 120-volt home charging, it takes much longer. Chevy says you can get 4 miles of range with a 1-hour charge using 120 volts.
On the other hand, using a DC Fast Charger provides up to 100 miles of range in approximately 30 minutes. That’s good, but remember that cold temperatures affect not only the charging rate of the Bolt EV, but also its range.
The Chevrolet Bolt EV continues to be built in Orion Township, Michigan, with electric motors and batteries coming from South Korea.
EPA fuel economy figures for the 2022 Chevy Bolt EV are 131 MPGe city/109 MPGe highway. Chevrolet says the new 2022 Bolt EV has a range of 259 miles.

Chevy Safety Assist
This standard safety suite includes a forward-collision alert, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and a following-distance indicator.
Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
With this available technology, the Bolt EV will let you know if dangerous cross-traffic is approaching while you’re backing out of a driveway or parking spot. If you don’t hit the brakes, the car will do it automatically. We wish this was standard on the 2022 Bolt EV.
Front Pedestrian Braking
This standard safety feature is part of the Chevy Assist Suite. Front Pedestrian Braking will warn the Bolt EV driver if it senses a pedestrian ahead. If the driver does not respond, it will apply full brake pressure to prevent the collision altogether or lessen its severity.
