Driving Impressions

The 2026 Subaru Ascent is motivated by a 260-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive. The horsepower count is on the low end among 3-row midsize SUVs. For instance, the Chevy Traverse has 328 hp, the Ford Explorer has 300 hp, and the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/kia/telluride/">Kia Telluride</a> has 291 hp. A sprint to 60 mph from a standstill takes just under 7 seconds, which is okay for this class.
Still, the Subaru Ascent delivers an agreeable driving experience. The ride is smooth, the cabin is reasonably quiet, and the seats are supportive. The handling isn’t particularly agile, but that’s forgivable in a family SUV. Regardless of the driving situation, we find the Ascent manageable, comfortable, and adequately powered.
The Ascent doesn’t skip a beat if the roads get ugly. The standard all-wheel drive, generous ground clearance, and X-Mode with hill-descent control make it great in the snow and for mild off-roading. Comparable SUVs in this class with at least a modicum of off-road chops include the Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Honda Pilot TrailSport, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/traverse/">Chevy Traverse</a> Z71, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/ford/explorer/2026/">Ford Explorer</a> Tremor, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/nissan/pathfinder/">Nissan Pathfinder</a> Rock Creek.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
Considering the Ascent has standard all-wheel drive, its 22 mpg in combined driving (20 city/26 highway) compares well to even some of its front-wheel-drive (FWD) competitors. However, all but the base trim of the Ascent get knocked down to a 21 mpg combined rating because of their bigger 20-inch wheels.

A nice update to the base Premium trim this year is that it adopts some of the styling elements of the now-discontinued Onyx Edition, like black exterior trim and black wheels. The stylish Bronze Edition builds on the Limited trim with bronze accents, wheels, and interior stitching.

Interior

The interior of the Subaru Ascent has three rows of seats with room for up to eight people, or seven if you opt for second-row captain’s chairs instead of a bench. We find the first two rows spacious and comfortable, but would only relegate the kiddos to the third row. An adult of moderate height will fit back there, but it won’t be comfortable for very long. Its 31.7 inches of legroom places it in the bottom half of its segment. Second-row captain’s chairs make the second row more comfortable and the third row easier to access. They’re optional in the Premium and Limited trims and standard in every other trim.
The interior design is pleasant, and the seat comfort is suitable for long-distance road trips. Now that the Premium trim has standard StarTex water-repellant upholstery, there are no cloth seats in the 2026 Ascent lineup. The interior’s centerpiece is the standard tablet-type infotainment screen. This system is loaded with features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the native system is showing its age, and the interface can be a bit laggy. The interior grows nicer as you work your way up the model range, with perforated leather seats in the top Touring trims.
The cargo area in the Ascent is about typical for its class. With all the seats in place, it has 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Fold down the third row, and you get 43.5 cubic feet of space; if you can afford to fold down all of the back seats, you get a generous 75.6 cubic feet of space.

There’s only one engine available for the Subaru Ascent. It’s a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder mated to a CVT automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is standard on every Ascent trim.
The Subaru Ascent can tow up to 5,000 pounds, and Trailer Stability Assist comes standard. This is about the average tow rating in the segment.
<h3>3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
Subaru provides the average warranty coverage among non-luxury brands. For limited bumper-to-bumper coverage, it’s three years or 36,000 miles. The powertrain coverage is for five years or 60,000 miles.

The Subaru Ascent boasts excellent safety ratings. Its National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>) 5-Star overall rating is the highest possible. Another small change is the discontinuation of the Cosmic Blue Pearl paint option, replaced by Sapphire Blue Pearl.

Available as a 4-door Gran Coupe or a 2-door Coupe, the subcompact luxury 2026 BMW 2 Series is the most affordable new BMW car.

The 2026 228 Gran Coupe enjoys 241 horsepower, supplied by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This is a decent amount of power for a subcompact car and can dispatch the sprint from standstill to 60 mph in a pleasant 6.1 seconds. That’s about the same as the 201-hp Audi A3, and around a second quicker than the 200-hp Acura Integra.
The 228 Gran Coupe xDrive variant tends to be popular among buyers and hits 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The 2026 M235 xDrive Gran Coupe has a punchy 312 hp and needs only 4.7 seconds to reach 60 mph.
The thing about any 2 Series is that it’s poised and nimble, as if it were made especially for canyon roads, with quick steering and confidence-inspiring brakes. We also found the ride quality of the Gran Coupe to be surprisingly pliant. Both Gran Coupe variants have an adaptive M suspension as standard — we love this setup for its balance of suppleness and precision. A Comfort suspension is a no-cost option. Test-drive both to see which you prefer.
The Coupes (rather than the Gran Coupes) have either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. This will make a bigger difference on a track — but on public roads at sensible speeds, either model can be hugely enjoyable. We also noticed perceptible differences between the driving modes. And yes, we decided to keep the cars in Sport mode for the sharpened responses. The 230i hits 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, shaving off two-tenths with all-wheel drive.
BMW adds an adaptive M Sport suspension to the M240i Coupe, and this model is a great enthusiast’s choice without stretching to an M2. It reaches 60 mph in 4.5 seconds (RWD) or 4.1 seconds (AWD). Those seeking even greater thrills in a small and agile car should check out the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/m2/">BMW M2</a>, which we review separately.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The 228 xDrive Gran Coupe achieves an impressive 30 mpg in combined city/highway driving. We expect the front-drive 228 Gran Coupe to improve on that by about a mile per gallon. The M235 xDrive Gran Coupe returns 27 mpg combined.
The 230i xDrive Coupe (with all-wheel drive) achieves 28 mpg combined. Add another couple of miles per gallon with rear-wheel drive. The M240i Coupe achieves 26 mpg combined, regardless of the number of driven wheels.
For comparison, the base version of the Acura Integra runs to 33 mpg combined, and an entry-level Audi A3 is rated at 28 mpg combined.

Two Body Styles

In our opinion, big grilles only work on big cars, if they work at all. The 2 Series is small, and BMW has decided against anything radical here, adopting a mature and fairly conservative look instead. The Gran Coupe is a 4-door model, while the Coupe is a proper coupe with two doors and that more classic profile of a (relatively) long nose and short tail. For what it’s worth, we like them both.
The optional M Sport Professional package includes a black rear spoiler and upgraded brakes with red or blue calipers.

Engines 
Although BMW makes some great 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder engines, even the 4-cylinder units deliver their goods in a pleasing manner. The ones in the 2026 2 Series seem to have a little more muscle than their stated specifications (BMW tends to do that).
BMW Curved Display 
This standard feature includes a configurable 12.3-inch driver information display and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen for other functions — all in one curved unit. It brings a great high-tech feel to the cabin.
Performance Control 
This feature is BMW terminology for brake-based torque vectoring. The outside rear wheel goes around a bend faster than its counterpart on the inside, making cornering as efficient and stable as possible. It’s standard across the 2 Series range.
Technology package 
We’d be inclined to select this optional bundle to gain a 360-degree camera system, a head-up display, and augmented reality for the navigation system.
Driving Assistance Professional package 
Tech like lane-changing assistance, evasive steering assistance, and the Traffic Jam Assist function will alleviate the grind of long freeway stretches and stop/go conditions. They’re all in this optional package.
Active Front Seats 
Another helpful option for long trips, these seats employ subtle up/down and side-to-side movements to keep the spine in motion and exercise specific back muscles.

Intimate Interior

As the most affordable new BMW, the 2026 2 Series still has an upscale cabin with quality materials, and we appreciate the well-considered layout. Space up front is fine. We’ve also found the seats comfortable, bringing plenty of support for the sides and under the thighs.
Heated front seats are standard, and there are four color choices apiece for either BMW’s SensaTec simulated leather or the real stuff. A few wood trims are available in all Coupes, and carbon-fiber trim is offered in the M240i. Air vents are enlivened by multicolored ambient lighting. At the same time, controls for climate functions plus seat and steering wheel heating (where fitted) are accessed through the infotainment touchscreen or by voice activation.
There are four seats in the Coupe, five in the Gran Coupe if you count that little middle seat in the back. The Gran Coupe has 34.4 inches of rear legroom, an advantage of about a couple of inches over the Coupe. However, that’s still not a lot for an adult of average size, and rear headroom in either model is hardly plentiful.
The Gran Coupe has a luggage area of 12 cubic feet, and its 40/20/40-split folding rear seats enable some cargo-carrying versatility. The Coupe also has 40/20/40 rear seats, although its trunk space is just 10 cubic feet. For reference, the Audi A3’s trunk measures 10.9 cubic feet. The Acura Integra’s liftback allowed us to fit in a mountain bike &#8212; with the back seats folded, of course.

We should mention up front that the 2 Series is the smallest car made by <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a>, so some people will already be contemplating something bigger. We get it — that’s why clothes are in S, M, L, etc. If the 2 Series could shape up as a good fit, however, you’ll find a car tailor-made for fun, delivering that inimitable BMW experience in a subcompact size.
The 2 Series offers two body styles, a range of excellent engines, and all-wheel drive. Even though the car is small, there’s still a good amount of choice.
We’ve logged hundreds of hours driving and evaluating this generation of <a href="https://www.kbb.com/cars/best-luxury-subcompact-cars/">subcompact luxury cars</a>, including the BMW 2 Series.

We recommend the 228 Gran Coupe, because it’s relatively affordable and more practical than the 2-door Coupe. If necessary, go for all-wheel drive, but front-wheel drive is still capable of handling a lot of bad weather.
Rivals include the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/a3/">Audi A3</a> and the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/acura/integra/">Acura Integra</a> — both 4-door models. The Acura begins at a lower price, while the Audi is more in the BMW ballpark. A couple of possible left-field alternatives could be the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/gr-supra/">Toyota GR Supra</a> coupe (a joint project with the BMW Z4 and built in Austria), which is more expensive than the 2 Series (except for the M2), or the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mini/hardtop-2-door/2025/">Mini Cooper Hardtop</a> John Cooper Works, priced similarly to the 2.

The 4-door 2026 228 Gran Coupe has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is the setup in the 228, and all-wheel drive comes in the 228 xDrive.
The M235 xDrive Gran Coupe also has a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. This one generates 312 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and drives all four wheels.
The 2-door 230i Coupe employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This power goes to the rear wheels. The 230i xDrive Coupe has all-wheel drive.
A turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine propels the M240i with 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque going to either the rear wheels or all four if there’s an xDrive suffix.

This generation of 2 Series Gran Coupe had been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>), the institute’s second-highest accolade. The 2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is powered by a 220-horsepower hybrid 4-cylinder engine matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive (FWD). This makes the Prius PHEV more fun to drive than you might imagine, with a quick zero to 60 mph time of about six seconds. It’s responsive in city driving between traffic lights and even has decent highway passing muscle.
We’ve found that it’s similarly lively using just the electric motor. So, if drivers want to stay in EV mode as much as possible, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid can still deliver an enjoyable experience. A button on the center console enables EV mode or an automatic mode that engages the combustion engine as needed. We appreciate this system’s simplicity.
There’s comfort and composure in equal measure, and the car feels nicely poised. We’d be happy to run commutes and longer trips alike in the Prius Plug-in Hybrid. A more confident initial bite on the brake pedal would be welcome, though.
The cabin is mostly quiet, with just some tire noise coming up while driving over rough surfaces. That’s to be expected since these are special tires with low rolling resistance that contribute to overall fuel economy.
When checking the rearview mirror, the slope of the back window creates a small aperture, so outward vision isn’t great. The top XSE Premium trim offers the option of a digital rearview mirror for a much clearer and wider view behind. It’s a shame it’s not available with lower trims, but at least blind-spot monitoring is standard.
<h3>Fuel Economy and Range</h3>
In the base SE trim, the amazingly efficient Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid goes up to 44 miles on a full charge. With a depleted battery, it returns 52 combined mpg. In the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium trims, those numbers drop to 39 miles of all-electric range and 48 combined mpg with an empty battery. The <a href="https://fueleconomy.gov/feg/make.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">EPA</a> estimates that the difference in monthly fuel costs is only about $4, so don’t feel bad about springing for one of the upper trims.
The electric range, efficiency ratings, and fuel costs of the Toyota Prius PHEV are all better than the Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid. The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is simply one of the most efficient vehicles with a gas engine that money can buy.

Sleek Exterior

With this latest generation, the Prius makes an entirely different statement than earlier models. It’s now sleek, modern, and decidedly cool, especially with the new Nightshade Edition available.

44-mile electric range 
The ability to travel up to 44 miles on electricity alone means the average American can potentially go weeks without burning any gas. Just plug in overnight and you’ll have enough juice for daily driving duties, while the gas engine is there for when you need to go farther.
Infotainment systems 
Excellent tech throughout the Prius Plug-in Hybrid lineup includes wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto as standard, six USB-C ports, and decent-sized touchscreens. Voice control, wireless phone charging, and over-the-air updates are also available.
Proactive Driving Assist 
A welcome standard feature, this predictive system provides gentle braking and steering assistance in everyday driving, and helps keep you a safe distance from pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vehicles ahead of yours. The system can be toggled on or off.
Traffic Jam Assist 
This is available with a Drive Connect trial or subscription. At speeds up to 25 mph, the system can operate the throttle, brakes, and steering — as long as the driver is still concentrating on the road ahead.
Digital Key 
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid allows access and functions like remote locking/unlocking by recognizing an authorized phone. This is optional in the XSE and Nightshade and standard in the XSE Premium.
Solar glass roof 
Solar panels in the roof help charge the battery when the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is parked, or add extra power to run things like climate control while on the move. This is another option for the XSE Premium model.

High-Tech Interior

Toyota used to lean into the weirdness of the Prius by putting all of the gauges in the middle of the dashboard. With the most recent generation, we’re grateful that the driver information display is now in front of the driver. It’s a little thing, but existing Prius owners upgrading to the newest generation will appreciate it.
Elsewhere, there are clean lines and pleasing shapes. The infotainment touchscreen is a generous size, while the aerodynamic exterior results in reasonable levels of wind noise in the cabin. The only real downside is an underpadded center armrest. Since this is pricier than the average compact hybrid, we expect a little more from the interior quality.
Rear passenger space in the Prius PHEV remains the same as the regular Prius — a bit tight for average-sized adults, but not unbearable. The hatchback style is useful for carrying larger items, and there’s 20.3 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats — easily enough for three sets of golf clubs.
If cargo-carrying is a serious consideration, check out the more SUV-like Kia Niro PHEV, which has 54.6 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid only has 26.7 cubic feet.

The Toyota Prius name has been around for a quarter-century now, but not everyone knows it has a plug-in variant that’s even more efficient than the regular version (<a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/prius/">reviewed separately</a>). Range and Charging

A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine is augmented by an electric motor to send a total of 220 horsepower to the front wheels. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid can travel up to 44 miles on electricity alone and a whopping 600 miles when the battery and gas tank are both full. These range ratings decrease a bit in the XSE, Nightshade, and XSE Premium trims: 39-mile all-electric range, 550-mile total range.
Charging the battery takes about four hours using a 240-volt supply or 11 hours on a diet of 120 volts from a typical household outlet. That means you can get by without having an expensive Level 2 charging unit installed in your garage; just use the regular outlet, and you’ll usually have enough electric power for gas-free daily driving duties.
<h3>3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
Toyota has a new-car warranty of three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens first. Powertrains are covered for five years or 60,000 miles. This is all typical for the mainstream category. The warranty for hybrid-related components is eight years or 100,000 miles. And the hybrid battery is covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Two years or 25,000 miles of free routine maintenance is also included.

This generation of Prius Plug-in Hybrid has received the top 5-Star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>). It also gets the top &#8220;Good&#8221; rating in the Crashworthiness categories of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>) testing. Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian/cyclist/motorcyclist detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, plus front cross-traffic alert and intersection assistance.

Following the lead of the regular Prius, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid introduces a Nightshade Edition for the 2026 model year. It’s essentially an appearance package for the XSE trim with moody black trim and black 19-inch wheels.

The 2026 Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV with contemporary design, spa-inspired comfort, and impressive capability.

Power, Ride and Handling

The Navigator’s powertrain packs 440 horsepower and standard 4-wheel drive (4WD). Despite the vehicle&#8217;s considerable size and mass, this combination accelerates rapidly without drama or much fanfare, accruing speed smoothly and effortlessly. The standard adaptive air suspension is impressive, controlling the body well without creating a harsh or bouncy ride. The steering and pedals require only light touches.
Spanning the base of the dashboard is a massive, high-resolution screen designed to convey as much information as possible while keeping the driver&#8217;s eyes close to the road. The adaptive suspension also scans the road surface ahead, enabling it to adjust proactively.
The BlueCruise hands-free system is also standard in the Navigator. While it’s not available on as many miles of roadway as GM’s Super Cruise system — or Tesla’s Full Self Driving (Supervised) — it’s more than up to the task of lane-following and driver assistance on the roads where it is available. Our one beef with the system is that it seems a bit overeager to lose track of the lane markers, handing control back to the driver at sometimes unpredictable moments.
Fuel Economy
The 2026 Lincoln Navigator is rated at 17 mpg combined, based on 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Those figures are in line with the competition and, let’s be realistic, in line with the physics of moving a large, rectangular vehicle rapidly through the air. The Cadillac Escalade achieves 16 mpg combined, for comparison, and the Lexus LX is rated at 19 mpg combined.

Strong Exterior

The 2026 Lincoln Navigator’s look is one of the most important parts of the overall Navigator formula. Imposing yet reserved, the Navigator’s style is not unlike a former NFL player turned business-suited senator.
It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those inclined to sip, it also comes with 22-inch wheels as standard, and offers 24-inch wheels as an upgrade, lending an even more planted stance to the already solid Navigator.

Black Label Atmospheric 
The Black Label Atmospheric theme features distinctive details such as 24-inch Radiant Copper-painted aluminum wheels, copper-accented exterior trim, and a coordinated interior design theme.
Lincoln Rejuvenate 
Lincoln Rejuvenate is an innovative spa-inspired system designed to create a calming, multisensory experience by harmonizing several features.
Panoramic Display 
This 48-inch display delivers vivid, high-resolution instrumentation and infotainment. Despite all that attention-garnering real estate, the screen is positioned at the bottom of the windshield to help keep the driver&#8217;s eyes on the road.

Squared-off steering wheel 
This wheel combines form and function. Its flat-bottomed design facilitates entry and exit, and its flat top provides an unobstructed view of the panoramic display and the road ahead. Heated and leather-wrapped, it comes standard in all Navigator variants.
BlueCruise 
With more than 130,000 miles of divided highways mapped, Lincoln’s BlueCruise system ranks among the most advanced hands-free driving technologies currently available.

Comfortable and Spacious Interior

The 2026 Lincoln Navigator offers seating for up to eight across three rows. In Black Label models, the front seats provide up to 30-way powered adjustment, plus heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Lincoln’s Rejuvenate feature adds a spa-like experience when parked, combining seat movement, ambient visuals, audio, and even a calming scent.
A 48-inch panoramic display spans the dashboard and is paired with a 28-speaker Revel audio system for an immersive environment. Second-row captain’s chairs offer heating, ventilation, and massage, while the third row accommodates three passengers with a versatile 40/20/40 split.
All in all, the 2026 Navigator’s cabin is quiet, comfortable, and spacious. The second row offers up to 42 inches of legroom thanks to the sliding seats, while the third row has even more — up to 43.5 inches. There’s plenty of cargo space as well, with 21.6 cubic feet behind the third row and 107 cubic feet in total. Fold the second-row seats flat for 69.9 cubic feet of space. Only the Escalade offers more total cargo space in this full-size luxury SUV sector.
Additional conveniences include wireless charging, up to 14 USB ports, and a split tailgate with integrated cargo management.
