Driving Impressions

As the top dog and most expensive variant in Kia’s broad lineup of Sportage models, the plug-in hybrid model has the most power and the most flexibility. For 2026, it brings 268 hp to the table, which is seven more than last year and 36 more than the non-plug-in Kia Sportage Hybrid. We’ve found this potency serves well for both getting up freeway on-ramps quickly and when passing at higher speeds. It’s also assuring to have all-wheel drive standard — power going to all four wheels provides better grip than just two.
But the real x-factor of a plug-in hybrid is its ability to drive on battery power alone, akin to an all-electric vehicle. For the Sportage PHEV, that means up to 34 miles of electric-only range. After that, the onboard turbocharged engine kicks in, enabling you to drive this Kia plug-in hybrid just as you would any other combustion vehicle.
In our miles and miles of testing, we’ve found the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid’s chassis comfortable yet controlled, smooth, and settled. We also appreciate that, unlike many gas-electric vehicles that use a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that can drone, here you get a 6-speed automatic transmission. There are even steering wheel-mounted paddles that grant full control of shifts when in Sport mode. For 2026, when the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is in Eco or Smart mode, those paddles adjust the level of brake regeneration — even with the ability to bring the vehicle to a stop when the left one is held. We like this feature on Kia’s all-electric vehicles, and applaud its inclusion here.
One other little detail that registers with us: The audio system reduces volume automatically when the reverse gear is selected, so the driver’s concentration isn’t affected. It’s the little touches like this that make living with a car more enjoyable over the years.
Fuel Economy
Factoring in the 34 miles traveled using just the battery, the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid is capable of 84 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in combined city/highway driving. When operating as a regular hybrid, it achieves 35 mpg combined; all-wheel-drive versions of the Sportage Hybrid (not plug-in) run to 38 mpg combined. Total range for the Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is 430 miles, according to the EPA. An all-wheel-drive Kia Sportage Hybrid (non-plug-in) is good for up to 521.
The all-new 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid promises up to 50 miles of all-electric range and a powertrain that makes up to 320 hp.

It seems we’re in a golden age of compact SUV design. All that designed-by-committee stuff seems behind us, now that we have striking lookers like the current Kia Sportage lineup. In our imagination, that little euphoric buzz whenever we walk up to the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid and press the fob’s Unlock button would always be there.
Some of the most visually striking elements of the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid are the boomerang-like lights around the headlight housing, the sloping roof that meets a pinched C-pillar, and the wide taillight treatments. To our eyes, it’s all a cohesive and stylish package.

Plug-in hybrid drivetrain 
It isn’t just the fuel economy and lower emissions that makes a plug-in hybrid so interesting; it’s also the extra thrust from the electric side. And Kia covers it with a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Dual displays 
These 12.3-inch screens (one for the driver, one for the infotainment system) are set into a single panoramic unit and contribute to the cabin’s contemporary feel. The instrument cluster in the less expensive X-Line model houses a 4.2-inch TFT cluster, while the top-line X-Line Prestige gets a full 12.3-inch TFT.
Drive Wise 
This is the name of Kia’s set of driver aids. We’ve noticed how well things like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance work in the Sportage PHEV, as they do across the company’s portfolio.
Powered tailgate 
This standard item comes with programmable heights and can open automatically when it detects the key nearby.
Blind-Spot View Monitor 
Standard in the X-Line Prestige, this adds real-time video down either side of the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid (depending on which direction the turn signal is going), giving drivers a greater awareness of traffic when chasing lanes or turning. This is one of those features we really miss when it’s not around.
Harman Kardon audio 
We’re always happy to see — and hear — a Harman Kardon system. They’re often found in BMW vehicles, so that’s how posh Kia can be. It’s standard in the top X-Line Prestige model.

Impressive Interior

The Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is part of the compact SUV pack, but it’s roomier than you might think, boasting one of the most spacious interiors of the bunch. This Kia’s 2-row/5-passenger cabin is also seriously impressive, deftly blending amenities and innovation.
For example, when not being used to hold drinks, the center console’s cup holder area can transform into a storage place for larger items. Then there’s the one control that can adjust either the audio volume or the cabin temperature, depending on which mode is selected. We like the idea and the intention of keeping things as tidy as possible, but we’d gladly accept dedicated controls for each function because we don’t want to think about those modes when we’re driving.
We have nothing but praise, though, for the expansive unit that houses dual instrument cluster/infotainment displays, the 39.5 inches of rear legroom, and the 34.5 cubic feet of luggage space behind the rear seats. The other Sportage variants have more rear legroom and cargo space, admittedly, but they don’t have this PHEV’s larger battery.

The Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is available in two well-equipped trims: X-Line and X-Line Prestige. The X-Line sells a bit better than the X-Line Prestige, but if you have the budget, the Prestige adds especially desirable features. They include dual panoramic 12.3-inch screens, memory driver’s seat with two settings, power-adjustable passenger seat, heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, Harman Kardon premium audio, enhanced forward collision avoidance system, Kia’s Blind-Spot View Monitor, and even a system that enables you to remotely park the car while standing outside of it.
As for competition, there’s less of it in 2026 with plug-in hybrid versions of the Dodge Hornet and Ford Escape out of the picture. Kia’s closest rival is also its kin, Hyundai, with the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/hyundai/tucson-plug-in-hybrid/">Tucson Plug-in Hybrid</a>, whose two trims are similar in price. The big question mark at the time of this writing is the all-new <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/rav4-plug-in-hybrid/2026/">2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid</a>, for which pricing has yet to be announced. For some context, the 2025 version of the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid begins a bit higher at just over $46,000.

A turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine joins two electric motors to create a total output of 268 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, making this plug-in hybrid the most powerful Sportage. Energy goes to a standard all-wheel-drive system through a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power increase this year comes thanks to the electric motor output increasing from 66.9 kW to 72 kW.
As for recharging, it takes two hours to give the battery a full recharge using a 240-volt supply.
The Kia Sportage Plug-in Hybrid is rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds.

5-Year/60,000-Mile Warranty
Kia offers unbeatable warranties. New-car coverage is five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first (a typical warranty here is three years or 36,000 miles). The powertrain warranty lasts 10 years or 100,000 miles, much better than most competitors. The hybrid battery is also covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Safety Ratings
This generation of Sportage (regardless of drivetrain) has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the institute’s second-highest accolade. In crash-testing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Sportage earns the top 5-Star rating. Standard safety features in the Sportage Plug-in Hybrid SUV include forward collision warning with pedestrian/cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assistance.

The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is powered by a 269-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Turbo 4-cylinder engines in this class are a bit of a mixed bag, and this is one of the good ones.
We’re satisfied with the confident power delivery and smooth refinement of this engine. Even though it has the heft of a midsize SUV, the Atlas Cross Sport still manages to deliver some of the same qualities that have long made Volkswagen vehicles so uniquely satisfying to pilot.
We found the Atlas Cross Sport to be an easy SUV to drive, and it&#8217;s slightly easier to wheel around a tight parking lot than the VW Atlas. Although they have the same wheelbase, the 3-row Atlas is five inches longer than the 2-row Atlas Cross Sport. We’ve found highway ride comfort and cabin noise slightly more refined than the average for this segment, as we&#8217;d hope for in a vehicle from a German brand.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport gets 20 city/27 highway/23 combined mpg with front-wheel drive and 20 city/26 highway/22 combined mpg with all-wheel drive. These ratings are about average for a midsize 2-row SUV, but hybrids like the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/crown-signia/">Toyota Crown Signia</a> and plug-in hybrids like the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/jeep/grand-cherokee-4xe/">Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe</a> and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mazda/cx-70-phev/">Mazda CX-70 PHEV</a> are getting more common in this segment.

Sporty Exterior

The design of the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is on the sporty side of this class, while carrying an air of German sophistication. Bucking the off-road trend spreading through its class, its sloping roofline and sleek wheel designs suggest a more athletic than rugged look, which we find refreshing. The 3-row Atlas is about five inches longer, so the Cross Sport version gives you a little extra room in the garage.

Turbo engine 
A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with performance similar to the old V6 powers every 2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. It strikes a nice balance of pep and efficiency.
12-inch infotainment screen 
A 12-inch screen is the centerpiece of the interior of the Atlas Cross Sport. It has wireless smartphone connectivity, and four USB-C ports come standard (up to six are available).
Digital Cockpit Pro 
The Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro is one of our favorite digital gauge clusters. The Atlas Cross Sport has a 10.25-inch fully configurable display that can show everything you want to see and nothing you don’t.
Standard comfort features 
The Atlas Cross Sport has an impressive list of standard features, including 3-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more.
IQ.DRIVE 
The Atlas Cross Sport comes standard with IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology. It bundles features like lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. Additional optional IQ.DRIVE features include adaptive cruise control and a head-up display.
R-Line styling 
The two top trims of the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport come with the R-Line appearance package, enhancing this SUV’s sporty aesthetic with unique front and rear fascias, big wheels, and, in the case of the R-Line Black model, more black accents.

Roomy Interior

The interior of the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport boasts a more premium look and feel than its price tag suggests. It’s also packed with desirable standard features like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, tri-zone climate control, and a digital gauge cluster.
Interior space is one of the biggest strengths of the Atlas Cross Sport. At 40.4 inches, its backseat legroom is among the best in its class, allowing adults to stretch out in comfort. Cargo space is also impressive at 40.3 cubic feet behind the back seats and 77.6 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. Only the redesigned <a href="https://www.kbb.com/honda/passport/2026/">2026 Honda Passport</a> has more cargo room.
A couple small gripes: We found some of the steering wheel controls, like the horizontal volume buttons and lack of a volume knob, a little unintuitive and hard to get used to. The menu to control SiriusXM also feels clumsy.

If a compact SUV is too small, but you don’t need a third row of seats, then the 2-row Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport might be your perfect midsize SUV. It has much of what we love about the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/volkswagen/atlas/">3-row Atlas</a>, like an impressive list of standard features and pleasant ride quality. The difference is that the Cross Sport version forgoes the third row and features a sleek, sloping roofline while retaining generous interior space for both passengers and cargo. For a practical midsize SUV with some European flair, the VW Atlas Cross Sport is an appealing and more affordable alternative to a luxury SUV.

The standard engine in the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This engine makes more torque than both of the discontinued Atlas Cross Sport engines from before its 2024 refresh, and almost as much horsepower as the old V6.
The Atlas Cross Sport still boasts a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Like most of its rivals, front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional.
<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
The Atlas Cross Sport is backed by 4-year/50,000-mile basic and powertrain coverage. That’s a longer basic warranty than most competitors but a shorter powertrain warranty. Given Volkswagen’s middling track record when it comes to reliability, warranty protection should be an important consideration. Volkswagen includes complimentary maintenance for two years or up to 20,000 miles.
<h3>Safety</h3>
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>) has awarded the Atlas Cross Sport with its Top Safety Pick award, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>) rated it with its highest 5-Star overall safety rating.

Available as a compact luxury coupe or convertible, the 2026 BMW M4 is gloriously sporty while remaining wonderfully civilized.

<li>A touch on the heavy side</li>

The quickest M4 is the 523-horsepower Competition xDrive Coupe, which can accelerate from standstill to 60 mph in only 3.4 seconds. At its entry level, the M4 produces a perfectly respectable 473 hp, enabling a rapid sprint time of 4.1 seconds. To compare, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 has 443 horses and hits 60 mph 0.1 of a second sooner than the M4 Coupe &#8212; we’ll attribute this to the extra traction from a standard all-wheel drive system.
Purists demanding a manual transmission will want the base M4. For enthusiasts, we think the manual shift/front-engine/rear-drive combination is fantastic. M4 Competition versions have more power yet come exclusively with an 8-speed automatic.
An adaptive M-tuned suspension is standard across the lineup, with settings from pliable to sporty. Whenever we’ve driven a BMW M car, we’ve always been impressed by how well-judged everything is, making it perfectly acceptable for daily drives and perhaps less frequent canyon-road thrills. That’s certainly true of this M4. We also like the steering feel (although the optional Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel might be too thick for some) and the always-reassuring brake pedal feel.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
Rear-wheel-drive versions of the M4 achieve about 19 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Subtract one mile per gallon when all-wheel drive is in the mix. BMW engines are often the most efficient of their class, but not this time. The Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe manages 23 mpg combined.

Two Body Styles

Although the regular 4 Series lineup includes a 4-door Gran Coupe version, this collection of M4 models is limited to just the 2-door Coupe and Convertible variants. Anyone wanting a high-performance compact sedan only has to walk a few steps across the BMW dealership floor to check out the M3. And buyers with their heart set on a soft-top M4 should know that it’s available solely in Competition guise with all-wheel drive &#8212; it’s the top-of-the-line choice.

BMW Curved Display 
This standard feature in the 2026 M4 includes a digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. This is the technological heart of the cabin and offers features like augmented video for navigation and Remote View through the MyBMW app to check on the car’s surroundings.
iDrive 
We think BMW’s infotainment system is user-friendly, with a smart menu structure that optimizes efficiency and reduces distractions while driving.
Harman Kardon audio 
An excellent 16-speaker, 464-watt surround-sound system is standard in every new M4.
Outstanding engine 
We love a BMW engine, especially when it has six cylinders in a line. This inherently smooth configuration is a BMW specialty. Everything is superb, from the power delivery to the sound.
M carbon roof 
This roof is lighter than steel, reducing overall weight and lowering the center of gravity for optimum dynamics. And it’s standard in the 2026 M4.
M Driver’s Package 
The central part of this package is a day’s instruction in high-performance driving.

Intelligent Interior

Sport seats up front provide plenty of support, holding their occupants snugly through fast corners. We’ve found this adds to a greater sense of confidence, which is also enhanced by intelligent ergonomics. Not that the 2026 M4 is focused purely on performance. There’s still fine leather upholstery as standard, plus a lot of technology that we&#8217;ve come to appreciate and would miss if it wasn’t there — like phone integration and wireless charging.
As a compact car, the M4 isn’t the best choice for transporting passengers in the back. Rear legroom in the Coupe is only 34.7 inches, and the low roof impacts rear headroom. We think the trunk space of 12 cubic feet (10.6 in the Convertible) is acceptable. Interestingly, the smaller and cheaper BMW M2 has a bigger trunk.

In a way, this makes more sense as one of those &#8220;if I won the lottery&#8221; cars than something like an Aston Martin. Such a lucky person could of course buy both, but we have a feeling they’d end up spending more time in the M4. After all, who wants to drive around solely in an exotic machine, where it’s vulnerable to the vagaries of life on the road? But the M4 retains an everyday usability, the talents and tech to tackle long journeys, and the corner-carving chops to thrill even the most jaded enthusiast.
<a href="http://www.kbb.com/bmw/">BMW</a> has a long and enviable reputation for making cars that balance the demands of thrill-seekers with the requirements of regular people, while still exuding a certain prestige. The M4 is yet another sublime creation.

Unsurprisingly for an enthusiast machine, Competition versions of the M4 &#8212; the ones with the most power &#8212; are popular. So who are we to recommend otherwise?
The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mercedes-benz/mercedes-amg-cle/">Mercedes-AMG CLE</a> is an obvious rival, because it’s also available as a coupe or convertible (aka cabriolet). It starts a little below the M4. If four doors are acceptable, the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/bmw/m3/">BMW M3</a> also comes in just under the M4, price-wise. The <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/rs-5-sportback/">Audi RS 5 Sportback</a> should be priced similarly, while the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/cadillac/ct4-v/">Cadillac CT4-V</a> Blackwing is a relative bargain.
Before buying a new M4 Coupe or Convertible, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should be paying. Resale values are average for the class. Recouping more money when selling a vehicle can mean a bigger down payment and lower monthly payments on the next one.

Both coupe and convertible 2026 BMW M4 variants begin with an ample 473 hp and 406 lb-ft emanating from a turbocharged 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. The Competition treatment boosts that to 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, and gains an 8-speed automatic transmission. When all-wheel drive (known as xDrive) is added, output rises yet again to 523 horsepower (same torque figure).

<h3>4-Year/50,000-Mile Warranty</h3>
BMW covers its vehicles and powertrains with a warranty lasting four years or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first. These terms are typical for European luxury car makers. There’s also roadside assistance for the first four years, with unlimited mileage, plus three years or 36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
<h3>Safety Ratings</h3>
The overall 4 Series (of which the M4 is a part) hasn’t been crash-tested by any agencies in the United States, but it has earned a maximum score of five stars from the Euro NCAP safety program. Standard safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert.

The Volkswagen Atlas is one of the roomiest and most family-friendly options in midsize 3-row SUVs and comes with a generous list of standard features.

The Volkswagen Atlas is powered by a 269-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with an 8-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). Turbo 4-cylinder engines in this class are a bit of a mixed bag, and this is one of the good ones.
We’re satisfied with the confident power delivery and smooth refinement of this engine. Even though it’s one of the largest vehicles in its class, the Atlas still manages to deliver some of the same qualities that have long made Volkswagen vehicles so uniquely satisfying to pilot.
We found the Atlas to be an easy SUV to drive, but it isn’t as easy to wheel around a tight parking lot as the smaller Toyota Highlander, for instance. However, that’s the unavoidable trade-off for more passenger and cargo room. We’ve found highway ride comfort and cabin noise slightly more refined than the average for this segment, as we hope for in a vehicle from a German brand.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
The Volkswagen Atlas gets 20 city/26 highway/23 combined mpg with front-wheel drive and 19 city/26 highway/21 combined mpg with all-wheel drive. These ratings are about average for a midsize 3-row SUV, but more fuel-efficient hybrids like the <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/grand-highlander-hybrid/">Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid</a> and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/toyota/grand-highlander-hybrid/">Hyundai Palisade Hybrid</a> are getting more common in this segment.

German Design

The Volkswagen Atlas carries a sophisticated subtlety that defines the VW brand. The R-line models add a sportier look with a gloss black grille and 21-inch wheels. The Peak Edition adds a more rugged look that includes blacked-out exterior trim, 18-inch black alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, and unique body cladding.

Turbo engine 
A turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with performance similar to the old V6 powers every 2026 Volkswagen Atlas. It strikes a nice balance of pep and efficiency.
12-inch infotainment screen 
A 12-inch screen is the centerpiece of the interior of the Atlas. It has wireless smartphone connectivity, and six USB-C ports come standard (up to eight are available).
Digital Cockpit Pro 
The standard Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro is one of our favorite digital gauge clusters. The Atlas has a 10.25-inch fully configurable display that can show everything you want to see and nothing you don’t.
Standard comfort features 
The Atlas has an impressive list of standard features, including 3-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and more.
IQ.DRIVE 
The Atlas comes standard with IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology. It bundles features like lane centering, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology.
Roomy 3-row seating 
The Volkswagen Atlas is among the best in its class regarding third-row legroom and headroom. Not all 3-row SUVs are created equal, but the roomy Atlas is an excellent choice if you regularly haul a full complement of passengers.

Large Interior

The interior of the Volkswagen Atlas boasts a more premium look and feel than its price tag suggests. It’s also packed with desirable standard features like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, tri-zone climate control, and a digital gauge cluster.
Interior space is one of the biggest strengths of the Atlas. This is a 3-row SUV for families who will actually use the third row regularly. It’s still no minivan, but the way-back seats in the Atlas have 33.7 inches of legroom, and we had little trouble climbing back there. That’s 2.3 inches more than the Kia Telluride, a meaningful advantage.
For such a roomy interior, you might expect the Atlas to be an 8-seater, but it maxes out at seven. There are only two seats in the third row, but without a middle seat in the way, these seats have decent width, meaning two adults can actually fit back there without having to cuddle. Every trim comes standard with second-row bench seating, and captain’s chairs are optional in all but he base trim.
The Atlas has 20.6 cubic feet of cargo room behind the third row, 55.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and a whopping 96.8 cubic feet when all of the rear seats are folded down. That’s about average for cargo room behind the third row, but among the roomiest in its class for space behind the first and second rows.
We have a couple of small gripes: Some of the steering wheel controls, like the horizontal volume buttons and lack of a volume knob, are not very intuitive and are hard to get used to. The menu to control SiriusXM also feels clumsy.

Midsize <a href="https://www.kbb.com/suv/best-3-row-suvs/">3-row SUVs</a> have become America’s preferred way of shuttling families who need more than five seats, but not all of them are as family-friendly as they seem. Just ask the passengers who have to sit in the third row. The Volkswagen Atlas is a midsize SUV with the style and capability that draws families to SUVs, but with a huge interior that’s actually comfortable in the way-back seats. Adult-friendly third-row seating isn’t its only strength; the Atlas also boasts good cargo space, a pleasant driving experience, and a generous list of standard features that help make it a strong value choice in its competitive class. Fast and refined, the 2025 Audi RS 6 Avant Performance excels at both handling and hauling.

<li>Likes gasoline a bit too much</li>

The 2025 RS 6 Avant Performance lives up to the last part of its name. Developing an awesome 621 horsepower, it will accelerate from standstill to 60 mph in only 3.3 seconds.
For comparison, the BMW M5 Touring is another high-performance wagon, but differs in crucial ways. Despite its awesome 717 hp, it’s a plug-in hybrid. That entails extra weight, so the car is a couple of tenths slower to 60 mph than the RS 6 Avant Performance.
Not a wagon, but a practical hatchback nonetheless, the Porsche Panamera GTS churns with 493 hp and burns to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. We don’t really care about a tenth or three. It’s not as if you’re going to find time to yawn in those fleeting fractions of a second. All these cars are wonderfully quick.
In the real world, we had to do a sensory double-take. How can a wagon be so exciting while retaining such practicality? If we had to describe the acceleration in one word, it would be “ferocious.” And the exhaust sound is glorious, a real V8 growl. We would also say the standard sport-tuned air suspension rides on the taut side, but that’s how it should be in a car like this. We still found it comfortable enough. And the cabin is sufficiently quiet when we weren’t revving the wonderful engine.
As well as all-wheel drive as standard, the RS 6 Avant Performance comes with rear-wheel steering, This enhances low-speed maneuverability (we were extremely grateful when doing a tight 3-point turn) and contributes to overall agility at higher speeds.
<h3>Fuel Economy</h3>
Anyone choosing a fast car with a powerful V8 isn’t likely to fret about the fuel bills. The RS 6 Avant Performance achieves 17 mpg in combined city/highway driving, but that’s not so bad in context. The Panamera GTS, for example, is rated at 18 mpg combined. The M5 Touring plug-in hybrid can travel for 25 miles on battery power, returning the equivalent of 54 mpg combined (MPGe). But when that battery is used up, the car only manages 13 mpg combined.

Subtly Sporty Exterior

It’s the subtly flared fenders that do it for us. Not over the top, but wide enough to accommodate the bigger rubber necessary for a performance car. The RS 6 Avant Performance also sits lower on its sport-tuned suspension than a regular A6 sedan. Factor in the usual elegant Audi lines and proportions, and there’s a lot to admire.
We also admire Audi for bringing such a remarkable wagon into the United States. It doesn’t matter if the American public seems mostly oblivious to the practical advantages of a wagon &#8212; like a lower center of gravity compared with an SUV (creating greater stability) and better aerodynamic performance &#8212; because the RS 6 Avant Performance is a niche car that resonates with a select few. We think it looks terrific in black, but Ascari Blue Metallic is also gorgeous.

Virtual Cockpit Plus 
No longer new technology, but Audi’s standard Virtual Cockpit Plus still impresses us with its clarity and ease of use. This digital instrument cluster has sharp graphics and, despite a wealth of information available, doesn’t require much time to master. The regular arrangement features white characters on a black background, but one RS-specific twist reverses that (if desired).
Powered tailgate 
Apologies for not going fully performance-minded, but we like how the RS 6 Avant Performance is also a luxury car in addition to being supremely fast. Convenience features like this really add to the day-to-day joys of ownership.
Head-up display 
In common with the Virtual Cockpit, this is no longer cutting-edge tech, but we like to see crucial information projected onto the windshield so we can retain our focus on the road ahead. This is part of the optional Executive package that also includes power-closing doors and remote parking assistance.
Driver Assistance package 
We wouldn’t be surprised if most RS 6 Avant Performance drivers will prefer to be completely engaged rather than use this optional package’s adaptive cruise control. We still recommend this $2,000 option, though, because it also includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, as well as intersection assistance. If it prevents just one collision, it would probably have paid for itself.
Bang &amp; Olufsen Advanced system with 3D sound 
We think this 19-speaker/1,820-watt array sounds fantastic. The standard system in the RS 6 Avant Performance is also a B&amp;O and only slightly less earth-shaking.
Ceramic brakes 
Sure, the standard brakes are great. However, this optional setup provides extra confidence and reassurance, especially for any RS 6 Avant Performance owners considering taking their car to the track.

Elegantly Practical Interior

“Audi-posh” is how one member of our test team put it, meaning that the cabin of the RS 6 Avant Performance is full of fine materials and tech, all put together in that elegant yet understated Audi way. We also love the shape and support of the sporty RS front seats, and the seating surfaces of perforated leather.
We think the central display is a good size at 10.1 inches on the diagonal. It’s big and clear enough to show information, yet not distracting like some larger screens can be. We also appreciated the quad-zone climate control. Rear legroom of 37.4 inches is acceptable among midsize cars and enough for adults of up to average size.
Because Avant is Audi-speak for wagon, the RS 6 Avant Performance has plenty of versatility when carrying people and things. Behind the split/folding rear seats is a cargo area measuring a generous 30 cubic feet, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet when those seats are down.

The next time someone tells you Father Christmas doesn’t exist, just point to the RS 6 Avant Performance and ask them to explain this car’s existence, if they possibly can. This <a href="https://www.kbb.com/audi/">Audi</a> wagon (the company uses the term “Avant” in place of the “wagon” word) is an absolute gift to the automotive world. It’s so nice &#8212; and so tempting to be naughty.
We know many people buy SUVs for the ability to carry stuff as well as people, and they often like a luxury version with substantial power. This car is similar from the standpoint of extra versatility. It’s also comfortable and luxurious. And we would add handsome to its list of qualities. The RS 6 Avant is propelled by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 making a mighty 621 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. This goes to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. A mild hybrid system also smoothes out the fuel-saving stop/restart function and maximizes efficiency in general.

Audi’s new-vehicle and powertrain warranties last four years or 50,000 miles, whichever happens first. This is common among European luxury car makers. Audi also includes four years of roadside assistance.

The RS 6 Avant hasn’t been crash-tested by any agencies in the United States, but the A6 (on which the RS 6 Avant is based) has. Earlier A6 model years have been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (<a href="https://www.iihs.org/ratings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IIHS</a>). Last year’s version took top scores of Good in the three updated crash tests carried out by the institute. The A6 also received a maximum five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (<a href="https://www.nhtsa.gov/ratings" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NHTSA</a>).

The 2026 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross compact SUV boasts a cool design, standard all-wheel drive, and an excellent warranty.

The 2026 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is powered by a 152-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive. Here again, the Eclipse Cross can’t help but trail the competition.
The modest Honda HR-V has more oomph with 158-horsepower, while a turbocharged <a href="https://www.kbb.com/mazda/cx-30/">Mazda CX-30</a> boasts up to 250 hp – nearly 100 more than the humble Eclipse Cross. Even a base Mazda CX-30 easily outperforms the Eclipse Cross with 191 hp, comes standard with all-wheel drive and adaptive cruise control, and has traditionally undercut the Mitsubishi in price.
That said, this Mitsubishi’s little engine delivers satisfying thrust low in the rev range, making it suitable for shorter commutes. Longer treks and hilly terrain prove more challenging. We found the Eclipse Cross one of the slowest SUVs in its class, and its pokey highway performance underwhelmed us.
The Eclipse Cross performs adequately if most of your driving duties are on city streets. The ride is quiet and comfortable, and the standard all-wheel-drive system makes it a good choice for snowy climates.
Fuel Economy
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross&#8217;s combined fuel economy rating is 26 mpg in the base ES trim and 25 mpg in every other trim. This is below average for a compact SUV. For comparison, when equipped with all-wheel drive, the Honda CR-V gets up to 29 mpg, as does the Mazda CX-30. Several hybrid options in this class can get 40 mpg or better.

The exterior design of the Eclipse Cross could be one of its most attractive traits, literally. It boasts dramatic body lines, a stylish light signature, and a coupe-like roofline in the back. Black Edition models bring the required darkened wheels and other elements. If you dig having the Eclipse Cross name emblazoned across the hood, good news: SEL and SEL Touring models get that as standard for 2026.

Exceptional Warranty
Mitsubishi vehicles are backed by an exceptional warranty, and the Eclipse Cross enjoys 5-year/60,000-mile basic coverage and a powertrain backed by a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Super All-Wheel Control 
When comparing prices, keep in mind Mitsubishi’s robust all-wheel-drive system is standard across the Eclipse Cross lineup.
Apple CarPlay/Android Auto 
Both popular phone integration systems are now standard on the base model for 2026.
Panoramic sunroof 
Not every compact SUV offers a panoramic sunroof. On the Eclipse Cross it becomes available at the SE level.
Touring package 
Climb to the very top of the Eclipse Cross range and your view will include a head-up display, heated rear seats, adaptive cruise control, upgraded forward collision mitigation, and an upgraded sound system.

Adequate Interior

The 2-row, 5-passenger cabin of the Eclipse Cross ranges from pretty basic to, well, just fine. Mercifully, the base ES trim gets the 8-inch touchscreen that previously required a step up in trims, and that means this base trim also – finally – gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Still, even that screen is just adequate these days when a less-expensive Hyundai Kona comes standard with a 12.3-inch unit. Also, unlike that Hyundai model and many other rivals, you won’t get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the Mitsu. So hang on to that cord.
There are some nice touches, though; we like that automatic climate control is standard. Higher trims offer plusher accommodations with leather seats and amenities like a heated steering wheel and a head-up display.
We found getting in and out of the back seats a bit awkward because of the sloping roofline that gives the Eclipse Cross its unique look. Once we were settled, however, the space and comfort were fine. It has an adequate 37.1 inches of rear legroom, but less than some subcompact SUVs like the Chevy Trailblazer, which has 39 inches.
The cargo room of the Eclipse Cross is also just OK. The Eclipse Cross has 23.4 cubic feet of room behind the back seats. Fold down the rear seats and get 50.1 cubic feet of space. We’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, <a href="https://www.kbb.com/volkswagen/taos/">Volkswagen Taos</a>, and <a href="https://www.kbb.com/chevrolet/trailblazer/">Chevy Trailblazer</a> all have more cargo space, more rear legroom, and lower starting prices than the Eclipse Cross.
